Usher reveals that his Las Vegas wedding to Jennifer Goicoechea also surprised their family

The couple wed in February, hours after the “Yeah!” singer headlined the Super Bowl.

Usher didn’t just shock fans when he got hitched in Las Vegas this year, he also surprised his own family.

Hours after headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the singer married his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Goicoechea in a classic Vegas wedding — Elvis and all. While attending the 2024 NAACP Image Awards this weekend, where he won Entertainer of the Year and was granted the President’s Award, Usher revealed that the ceremony caught their entire family off guard.

"It was an incredible moment that we felt was great for us," he told Entertainment Tonight. "It was a button at the end of an incredible Las Vegas run. My mother was there, her mother was there, the kids were there, our immediate family was there. Matter of fact, everybody was surprised. I'm like, 'No, no, no, we're having a wedding right now.’ They’re like, ‘What?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, we're gonna go have Elvis officiate us.’ It was great.”

Usher added that while the couple still has plans for another "incredible, over-the-top wedding," they decided the legal ceremony was a great way to close out their time in Vegas. Prior to the Super Bowl peformance, he also wrapped his My Way residency, which kicked off in July 2022.

Initial reactions aside, their wedding wasn’t entirely out of left field. Usher and Goicoechea have been together since 2019, and share two children in addition to the singer’s teenage sons from ex-wife, Tameka Foster. A week before taking the spotlight at the Super Bowl, he hinted at their impending nuptials in an interview with PEOPLE.

"Listen, when you find someone that you know is a great partner, of course it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to share life with someone who wants to share it with you and loves you, who you are," he told the outlet. "We've obviously made a commitment to life for life together because of our children. It wouldn't be odd for us to get married.”

He added, "We have an amazing dynamic between our relationship where I'm able to be passionate still about what I do and have an incredible partner to work through some of the harder times as a young man dealing with children and dealing with the dynamic of how you communicate with them."
