Italian Navy Raises Migrant Boat Sunk Off Sicily

The Italian Navy on Wednesday, June 29, announced the recovery of a migrant ship that sank near Sicily in April 2015.

The navy raised the boat, as seen in this video, from more than 1,000 feet underwater, and kept the wreck in a refrigerated transport structure to facilitate the identification of victims. There were 28 survivors among the 700 to 800 migrants aboard the ship, which capsized after colliding with a civilian freighter that had come to its aid.

The incident is described as one of the “most deadly accidents at sea” in the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Credit: Marina Militare
