Over 400 Arrested During Baltimore Demonstrations

More than 400 people have been arrested in Baltimore and over 100 police officers have been injured in the protests and unrest that have swept the city. Police released the statistics during a press conference on May 3.

Protests started after the death of Freddie Gray a week after he suffered a critical spinal injury while in police custody. The protests turned to unrest on April 27, which triggered the implementation of a curfew and the activation of the Maryland National Guard.

From April 23 through May 3, 486 people were arrested in connection to protests and gatherings, said Captain Eric Kowalczyk, police spokesman. During the enforcement of the curfew on May 2, 46 people were arrested. Since April 25, 113 police officers have been injured.

Kowalczyk said he was heartened to see the peaceful protests that have prevailed in Baltimore, especially this weekend, and it shows the true nature of the community.

The weekend of peaceful rallies and protests were after six police officers were charged in connection with Freddie Gray’s death on May 1. The charges include murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct.
