Watch Dan + Shay Go Head-to-Head in PEOPLE's “The Voice” Trivia Competition — See How They Did!

The Grammy-winning duo is the first double-chair coaching team on the NBC competition show, and PEOPLE put their knowledge to the ultimate test

Dan + Shay are accustomed to being an award-winning duo, so PEOPLE decided to put the two friends to the real test.

Instead of the usual Dan and Shay, meet Dan vs. Shay, as the country singers go head-to-head in PEOPLE’s new Vs. series, where your favorite stars compete against each other in a trivia contest.

With the beloved duo joining season 25 of NBC’s The Voice as the first double-chair coaching team, Smyers and Mooney were tasked with answering questions about their fellow coaches, the long-running series and even each other.

The Grammy-winners start off strong — correctly naming all four original Voice coaches — before the question about who has appeared in every single season of show trips them up.

Hint: he often uses a microphone for his duties on both The Voice and NBC’s Today show.

“That was a trick question!” says Smyers.

His bandmate agrees. “We got got, dude,” admits Mooney.

In the next round, the guys zero in on their fellow coaches from the current season: Reba McEntire, John Legend, and Chance the Rapper.

For Mooney, the “queen of country music” herself, miss McEntire, poses the biggest threat to winning.

Smyers doesn’t disagree, but he does point out that Chance is “sneaky,” and might be a stealthier rival.

Legend rounds out the duo’s rankings as the most competitive coach overall, and, when asked who they’d most like to collaborate with, Smyers even teases that a massive “coaches performance” might be in store.

In the last round of Vs., the concept wasn't about Dan + Shay as a duo, or even Dan versus Shay in knowledge, but rather, Dan OR Shay.

While Mooney nominated himself as the lover of the spotlight — “Oh man, I'm going to have to say me. It's because I talk a lot. I talk a whole bunch!” he admits — Smyers unanimously took home the title of the tougher coach.

In the end, though, both guys agree that they’re better off as a sum of their parts.

“I think both of us together is [the] better stage performer,” says Smyers.

“That's right,” echoes Mooney. “Together? [We’re] great.”

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
