Prime Video is set to return with the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power this August. Created by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the show is largely based on appendices for J. R. R. Tolkien's namesake novel – which outline more details the writer envisioned for Middle-earth but didn't flesh out to the same degree.

The series is set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings during the reign of Sauron, a Dark Lord who rules over Mordor and aims to take over the entire Middle-earth. During that time, there’s also an alliance between elves and men, formed to combat the threat of Sauron.

The news of a second season isn’t a surprise to viewers. When Amazon acquired the rights to make the show, it made a 5-season commitment to the tune of $1 billion USD, making Rings of Power the most expensive show ever made.

A teaser trailer for season two opens with Sauron (Charlie Vickers) looking over a wasteland, while Durin IV (Owain Arthur) warns his people that "an evil, ancient and powerful, has returned."
