Watch Steve Martin crash Martin Short's “Jimmy Kimmel Live ”monologue: 'You're early'

“I’m so excited that you’re hosting 'Kimmel,' I just wanted to get right out here as soon as possible,” Martin said.

No, your television didn’t just switch to Hulu. Steve Martin really did crash his Only Murders in the Building costar Martin Short’s opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night.

Short, who is guest-hosting the show this week while Kimmel is on summer vacation, had delivered several jokes about Donald Trump and the upcoming presidential debate when he briefly noted that Martin would be on the show later. Rather than waiting, Martin jovially walked out onstage, past Short’s awaiting handshake.

“First of all, let me just say you’re early,” Short told his costar once he was standing next to him. “You look great, because you smiled and a hunk of makeup just fell off, but I caught it.”

Martin then explained his early appearance. “I’m so excited that you’re hosting Kimmel, I just wanted to get right out here as soon as possible,” he said. “And then get home.”

To which Short quipped, “Well, that’s right. Monday is meatloaf night at the senior center. I keep forgetting.”

Martin also voiced his support for Short’s new gig. “Well, you’re doing great,” he said. “I was watching the monologue — or, that’s probably what they’ll call it — and I was seeing hosting a network talk show is a very big deal.”

“It is,” Short agreed. “When Jimmy asked me to be his first guest host of the summer, I was, I must admit, truly honored.” Martin added, “And I was honored when Jimmy asked me to be the first guest host, but I said no. I said, ‘You’ll be able to find someone who’ll do it for scale, don’t you worry.’”

Despite their back-and-forth barbs, which brought them both to laughter multiple times, Short admitted that he appreciated Martin being there on his first night, adding, “There are very few people in this world that I truly admire, and Steve Martin is very close to being one of them.”

In return, Martin replied, “And I actually, I love Marty. He’s one of the hardest working men in show business because it just doesn’t come naturally to him.”

Martin returned later in the episode, where he joked that it was going to be an “uncomfortable” experience for Short to have to interview him. He teased, “Your job is to make me look good, which you have never done in your life.”

Short, to his credit, did at least try to compliment Martin, with some very backhanded success. “Really, Steve, everyone talks about this — it’s true — you don’t age,” he said. “And that’s the benefit of looking 70 since you were 30, but still.”
