Waterloo Road spoilers follow.

Waterloo Road newcomer Zak Sutcliffe has warned of trouble ahead for the school as his character Schumacher 'Schuey' Weever enrols as a new pupil.

Schuey will be one of the central characters in the third series of the show's revival, which begins on BBC One on Tuesday evening (January 2).

The new episodes see headteacher Kim Campbell arrange for a cohort of new pupils to join Waterloo Road. The group are all long-term 'refusers', who haven't attended school for months.

Schuey is one of these new arrivals and he quickly finds himself at odds with some of the existing pupils – including Dean Weever, who's his cousin.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media about what's ahead, Zak explained: "I wouldn't say Schuey is irredeemable, but he's not a nice lad. He has a twisted sense of loyalty.

"He is so bored and chaotic. He likes to lash out or do whatever he wants to do in the moment, consequences be damned! He's an opportunist.

"Before this, he's been kicked out of every school. It comes to a point where his dad will get fined if he doesn't start attending."

He continued: "Once he's there, Schuey decides that he's going to do whatever he wants – and carnage ensues!

"Without giving away spoilers, he has at least a little run-in with everyone you can imagine. He's not going to be nice to anyone!

"Even with Dean, you'll see a running theme with Schuey where you never know where you stand with him. There's always an opportunity for Schuey and that is paramount for him."

Reflecting on his new role, Zak praised Waterloo Road for its diverse storytelling and the opportunities it offers to working class actors.

He said: "I watched bits of it when I was younger with my brother – then in lockdown I watched the first three seasons again and felt crazy nostalgia. I then got my audition and thought: 'What a mad little twist of fate'. It felt cool to get the role.

"Being extremely working class I absolutely love what the show does. It tackles so many different aspects of people's lives today – everything from why people aren't in school, situations like mental health, family or financial issues, or a blend of all of them.

"It's good to see that represented and thought about in the casting and the writing. Watching it makes it easier to understand people from all different walks of life."

As with previous seasons, all eight episodes of the new Waterloo Road run have been uploaded to watch as a box set on BBC iPlayer.

Waterloo Road airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
