Weekend guide (20-22 January): Metallica Live in Singapore, St. Jerome's Laneway Festival

Singapore Art Week (SAW) has more activities in store this week. If you’re not an art aficionado, fret not as there’s definitely something to entertain you this weekend. Metallica comes to Singapore, along with the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival and if you’re into fitness, there’s a bootcamp by the beach that’s bound to get your heart pumping.

1. Metallica Live in Singapore

Metal-heads, get ready for one of the biggest names in rock music history. The rock band has paid two earlier visits to our sunny island and will rock the stage this coming Sunday at the Indoor Stadium.

2. St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival

Commonly referred to as Laneway, the festival has its roots in Melbourne and will be in Singapore for the eighth time this Saturday 21 January. Spread across four stages, the festival is held at The Meadow at the Gardens by the Bay. Some names to watch out for this year include Glass Animals, AURORA and American rapper Mick Jenkins.

3. PlayLAH! Let’s Celebrate Chinese New Year 2017

Fancy some quality time with your family over the weekend? PlayLAH! Let’s Celebrate Chinese New Year 2017 is back this year, bigger and better. The four-day event promises an exciting line-up of activities for the whole family. Some of the highlights for kids include the Kids Bumper Car, the Rainbow Bouncy Challenger and the Rooster Slide.

4. PRESSPLAY

For the fourth year running, PRESSPLAY is put together by the National Library Board’s Arts and Culture team to make arts more accessible to the younger generation. Local designers, art collectives, photographers, filmmakers and musicians will hold workshops, talks, discussions and performances across the National Library Board’s various libraries up till March.

5. Singapore Contemporary Art Show

Back for the second time, Singapore Contemporary Art Show is part of SAW and includes an extended line-up of more than 90 galleries and artists from around the region and the world. Popular galleries such as ‘China Encounters’ and ‘Gallery Projects’ will return this year and ‘Photo 17′ will make its debut.

6. We Are the World – These Are Our Stories

The unique creation of Singaporean artist Amanda Heng, We Are the World – These Are Our Stories, tells the story of 12 individuals via interviews and mini-performances. Heng incorporates QR codes into her show to extend the physical artworks into the digital dimension. Heng is known to create works that pull heartstrings and highlight social issues.

7. Momentum Bootcamps Beach Retreat

Need some adrenaline rush while sweating it out? Momentum Bootcamps is set to hit East Coast Park for some high-intensity 75-minutes of beach exercises followed by 40 minutes of yoga. In an attempt to keep the group small and provide more attention to the participants, the organisers only allow 16 participants per event, so hurry on and book your slot.

8. Yoga on the beach

Bask in the tranquil sunset and practise some yoga along Tanjong Beach as you wrap-up the weekend with this soothing and pleasant activity, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. An ideal activity to indulge in for those seeking a bit of calm over the weekend.
