SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (12 to 18 September):

Farhanna Farid breaks her world powerlifting record

Singapore national powerlifter Farhanna Farid broke her own world record in the women's Under-52kg deadlift, raising it from 200.5kg to 201kg at the inaugural Southeast Asian Cup in Johor Bahru on Friday (16 September).

Today reported that the 30-year-old, who has broken six Asian records since she started competing in 2018, was also named the overall best female lifter at the competition. She had set the earlier world record in June this year at the World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Sun City, South Africa.

Based on their total scores for the three lifts, Singapore's 48-strong contingent secured 26 golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes at the end of the four-day event on Sunday. They also broke seven Asian records, and were named the overall best team at the Southeast Asian Cup. Clinton Lee, the men's U-74kg open champion, was also named the overall best male lifter.

Nishigaya names 23 players for September friendlies

Singapore football men's national head coach Takayuki Nishigaya named a squad of 23 players on Tuesday (13 September) for international friendlies against Vietnam and India on 21 and 24 September respectively in Ho Chi Minh City's Thong Nhat Stadium.

Hougang United goalkeeper Mukundan Maran and Geylang International defender Joshua Pereira have been called up for the first time, while Balestier Khalsa's Ho Wai Loon and Geylang's Hazzuwan Halim return to the squad having last featured in October 2018 and June 2021 respectively.

The matches are part of preparations for the 2022 AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup, which begins on 24 December for Nishigaya’s charges when they kick off their Group B campaign against Myanmar at home.

Anumanthan, Shah Shahiran, Shahdan Sulaiman. Forwards: Faris Ramli, Glenn Kweh, Ikhsan Fandi, Ilhan Fandi, Song Ui-young, Taufik Suparno.

SGX Cares Bull Charge Charity Futsal event raises $111,000

SGX Cares - Singapore Exchange's outreach initiative - raised $111,000 in the seventh edition of its Bull Charge Charity Futsal tournament on Saturday (17 September).

Guest-of-honour Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, joined football great Fandi Ahmad, Mediacorp father-and-son duo of Zheng Ge Ping and Calvert Tay, and footballers in 31 teams in a fun-filled day at Kovan Sports Centre.

The donations raised from the event will be channelled via Community Chest to SGX's adopted beneficiaries for 2022: AWWA Ltd, Autism Association (Singapore), Fei Yue Community Services, HCSA Community Services and Shared Services for Charities.

To round off the SGX Cares fundraising year, the 19th annual Bull Charge Charity Run will be held in a hybrid format, with a virtual run starting on 28 October through to an in-person run that flags off from The Float@Marina Bay on 11 November.

Borussia Dortmund to play friendly against Lion City Sailors

German football giants Borussia Dortmund announced on Monday (12 September) that they will be playing a friendly match against the Lion City Sailors in Singapore, as part of a Southeast Asia tour amid the month-long Fifa World Cup break.

The tour will run from 21 November to 1 December, and the remaining members of the Dortmund first-team squad will play a match each in three locations: Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Details on the opponents and dates will be announced soon.

Dortmund, who have had an office in Singapore since 2014, last visited the Republic in 2015 when they held meet-and-greet sessions that sandwiched a friendly match at Johor Darul Takzim.

Lien Choong Luen elected for second term as SA president

Lien Choong Luen has been re-elected as president of Singapore Athletics (SA) on Friday (16 September), as his team trounced a team led by former SA vice-president Govindaraju Sinnappan 13-2 in the election at its annual general meeting, with one abstention and one voided vote.

The Straits Times reported that the 44-year-old Lien, who is the general manager of ride-hailing firm Gojek, will lead SA for another four years together with his management committee team, which is largely unchanged save for the departures of vice-presidents Gary Yeo and Joe Yap.

Despite the election result, 69-year-old Govindaraju, a managing partner at law firm Raj Govin, said he would still be contributing to the local athletics scene.

Women's paddlers earn bronze in WTT Almaty tournament

Singapore national paddlers Zeng Jian and Zhou Jingyi clinched a women's doubles bronze medal at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Saturday (17 September).

The duo had beaten Kazakhstan's Angelina Romanovska/Anel Bakhyt (11-4, 11-7, 11-7) and Sweden's Christina Kallberg/Linda Bergstrom (13-11, 11-5, 12-10), before losing to South Korea's Choi Hyo-joo and Shin Yu-bin in the semi-finals (3-11, 6-11, 7-11).

Zeng and Zhou had won a silver medal in the WTT Feeder tournament held in Panagyurishte, Bulgaria, earlier this month.

National junior paddler Zhu Lyon also clinched a joint-bronze medal in the boys U-11 singles event at the WTT Youth Contender tournament in Bangkok. The 11-year-old defeated compatriot Sun Qicheng and the United States' Mohammed Musthafa in the knockout stages before losing to India's Vatsal Duklan in the semi-finals.
