SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (11-17 October):
Loh Kean Yew wins Dutch Open, his first international title in 2 years
Singapore national shuttler Loh Kean Yew clinched his first international title in two years on Sunday (17 October), when he won the Dutch Open men's singles title after beating top seed Lakhsya Sen of India 21-12, 21-6 at the Topsportcentrum in Almere.
The is Loh's first tournament since making his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games in July. He had since done a one-month stint with Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in Dubai to sharpen his game.
This is the 24-year-old's sixth international title, and his first since his memorable Thailand Masters triumph in 2019, when he beat the legendary Lin Dan in the final.
Loh will remain in Europe to play in three more tournaments - the Denmark Open, the French Open and the Hylo Open in Germany.
Singapore to hold World Rugby Sevens leg in April 2022
Singapore has been named as one of the 10 men's tournaments in the 2022 World Rugby Sevens Series, with the event pencilled in for 9 and 10 April next year.
The 2022 Series will also feature seven women's tournaments, and will kick off with a pair of combined men’s and women’s events in Dubai on 26-27 November and 3-4 December. The Singapore leg will follow tournaments in Malaga, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
The 16 men’s core teams after the Dubai events are Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, the United States and Wales. South Africa will enter the 2022 Series as defending champions after claiming the 2021 title in Edmonton last month.
StarHub airing all T20 World Cup matches via Hotstar
StarHub is broadcasting all 45 games of cricket's T20 World Cup via video streaming app Hotstar from Sunday (17 October) to 14 November.
As the only local telco partnering Hotstar, which is available on the StarHub TV+ platform, it will offer customers with an Indian+ subscription access to all matches for free.
New StarHub customers can sign up for the Indian+ plan at $15 per month and enjoy Hotstar at no additional cost.
Eight nations will battle to become T20 champions in the final in Dubai on 14 November. The West Indies are the defending champions after winning their second title in 2016.
Superbon becomes ONE featherweight kickboxing champion with KO win
Superbon Banchamek became the inaugural ONE Championship featherweight kickboxing champion at the ONE: First Strike event broadcast from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday (15 October).
The Thai fighter knocked out top contender Giorgio Petrosyan with a vicious right kick to the Italian-Armenia's chin in the second round to claim the title in emphatic style. It was just the second knockout defeat of Petrosyan’s career, and his first since 2013.
In other bouts in the fight event - the first all-kickboxing event in ONE Championship history - four fighters progressed into the semi-finals of the featherweight grand prix tournament, which will determine Superbon's first title challenger.
Armenia's Marat Grigorian defeated the Netherlands' Andy Souwer via technical knockout in the second round; Thailand's Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong overcome Turkey's Tayfun Ozcan via split decision; Chingiz Allazov of Belarus stunned French-Algerian Samy Sana with a knockout win in just 39 seconds; and Georgia's Davit Kiria scored a first-round technical knockout win over Germany's Enriko Kehl.
