Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a riding school founder was stabbed to death in a quiet Welsh village.

Wendy Buckney-Morgan, 71, was found in a pool of blood by police at around 8.20am on Tuesday in the countryside village of Clydach, near Swansea.

Paramedics tried to revive Ms Buckney-Morgan but she could not be saved.

South Wales Police later confirmed that a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Ms Buckney-Morgan founded the Penyfedw Riding Centre, with stables around three miles away from her home.

One shocked villager said: "Wendy was a very popular member of the local community, she comes from a big family and is very well-known.”

Another neighbour added: "She always seemed like a lovely lady and we can't believe this has happened here. It is just so shocking.”

Conservative councillor Brigitte Rowlands said: "Everybody is really saddened by what has happened. It is an awful feeling that this could happen in such a pleasant village.”

It is the second murder to have shocked the village, after Mandy Power, 34, her daughters Katie, 10, and Emily, eight, and her 80-year-old mother Doris Dawson were brutally killed in their own home in 1999 – less than half a mile away from where Ms Buckney-Morgan was killed.

South Wales Police confirmed that a murder investigation has begun.

A spokeswoman said: "A 55-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.”

Acting detective superintendent Mark Lewis added: “Clearly, this incident will cause shock to the close knit community of Clydach.

"I want to assure the community that an early arrest has been made and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"There will continue to be an active police presence in the area as we progress our enquiries and seek to reassure the community”.
