West Brom 1-0 Southampton

Saido Berahino's 17th goal of the season was the difference between the two sides as West Brom saw off Southampton in a 1-0 win at the Hawthorns. The Baggies made the perfect start to the match in the second minute. Chris Brunt's ball into the box was headed down by Craig Dawson towards Berahino, who unleashed a superb left-foot volley which flew into the top corner. Southampton grew into the game and enjoyed long spells of possession but couldn't find a way though with Ben Foster rarely troubled. Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic had great chances but couldn't find the target, much to the frustration of Ronald Koeman who made a change to his formation after just 25 minutes, sending on Eljero Elia for Florin Gardos. The second half followed the same pattern as Southampton continued to pass the ball around but their lack of a cutting edge let them down. Graziano Pelle couldn't convert Saints' best chance, missing the target from a yard out, and scuffed another opportunity as time ran out for the visitors. The Baggies lost both Berahino and Brown Ideye to injury in the second half but hung on to claim all three points and move further away from the drop zone. Southampton remain in fifth place in the table but their lack of goals in recent matches will worry Koeman as the push for a top-four finish appears to be losing impetus.
