A hit musical had to cancel its opening night after a flood at a West End theatre.

Press night on Wednesday June 5 for Kathy and Stella Solve A Murder! at The Ambassador’s Theatre only got as far as the interval before the curtain had to come down and Thursday night’s performance has also been cancelled.

A spokesperson for the production said: “Due to a flood last night we are unfortunately unable to go ahead with tonight’s performance.  We intend to resume performances tomorrow.

“Audiences for this evening’s performance will be contacted in the coming days to confirm the options for their booking.”

The show, which started out at the Edinburgh Festival, is a murder mystery comedy musical about two true-crime podcasters who stumble into solving their own case.

Described in the Standard’s 2023 Edinburgh review as being full of “fantastically bouncy piano-led pop, with heavy cabaret vibes” the show is expected to be a major West End hit.

Writing on Twitter after press night was cancelled, the cast and crew joked they had suffered from “an unexpected major water leak in Kathy’s Mum’s garage” and said they were looking forward “to welcoming back tonight’s audience members who are having to wait a little longer than expected to find out whodunnit”.

The show, which capitalises on the boom in true crime podcasts, is one of several new musicals scoring hits with previously unlikely stories including Operation Mincemeat which is based on a real-life secret military operation to use a corpse to fool German intelligence.
