West Ham vs Freiburg LIVE!

David Moyes took the handbrake off West Ham and watched them race into the last eight of the Europa League with a 5-0 win over Freiburg.

Hammers boss Moyes uncharacteristically named an attacking line-up in a bid to repair the damage of the 1-0 first-leg defeat in Germany last week.

He was rewarded with a sparkling display as goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and two from Mohammed Kudus - including a sensational solo effort - secured a 5-1 aggregate win and a place in a European quarter-final for a third-successive season.

As a consequence the Hammers may have also done some of their Premier League rivals a favour, with the result pushing England ahead of Germany in UEFA's coefficient rankings, which could mean an extra spot in Europe next season.

West Ham vs Freiburg highlights

  • GOAL! Paqueta levels Europa League tie early

  • GOAL! Bowen adds second for West Ham

  • GOAL! Cresswell makes it three after restart

MOHAMMED KUDUS!

WHAT A GOAL!

The Ghanaian grabs the ball in his own half and steamrolls through the heart of the Freiburg defence, nutmegging one man and slotting home with aplomb.

Stunning! And he grabs a stool for his celebration in front of the home fans to cap a perfect night.

West Ham 3-0 Freiburg (3-1 agg.) | 74 mins

Edson Alvarez booked for a late lunge on Max Eggestein. That’s a suspension for the quarter-final first leg.

Lucas Paqueta wasn't delighted about being taken off

To be fair, he is on a booking in the Europa League and had earlier picked up a knock to the back of his leg...

Party football from Mohammed Kudus!

A delightful couple of flicks from the Ghanaian after he wins the ball back, and the West Ham fans indulge in some ‘Ole’-ing as a result.

West Ham 3-0 Freiburg (3-1 agg.) | 63 mins

Lucas Paqueta departs for West Ham. The Brazilian did look to hurt his calf in the first half, so no surprise to see him protected.

James Ward-Prowse replaces the clearly disappointed Paqueta.

Florent Muslija on for Nicolas Hofler as Freiburg also make a change. Lukas Kubler on for Manuel Gulde.

West Ham look the more likely to score again, here.

Dan Kilpatrick at London Stadium

18:58 , Marc Mayo

Lovely, lovely goal from Cresswell. His first touch with the studs was classy and that was a great finish into the bottom corner.

A touch of Europa League redemption for the left-back, who was sent off in the semi-final two years ago.

GGGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!!! West Ham 3-0 Freiburg | Cresswell, 51'

18:55 , Marc Mayo

THAT SURELY SETTLES IT!

Jarrod Bowen crosses from the right but it squirrels away from Tomas Soucek, rolling instead to Aaron Cresswell on the edge of the box.

The left-back has time to take a touch and pick out the far corner, and fires in off the post!

Dan Kilpatrick at London Stadium

18:53 , Marc Mayo

The atmosphere is oddly flat here, with the Freiburg supporters making most of the noise as the second half begins.

Probably down to the early kick-off and perhaps the air of comfort around the ground, with West Ham leading 2-0 and in a strong position to progress.

West Ham 2-0 Freiburg (2-1 agg.) | 47 mins

18:51 , Marc Mayo

Freiburg look to spring a quick start but West Ham are back in numbers.

David Moyes’ side will happily play on the counter if required as this clock ticks down.

Kick-off!

18:49 , Marc Mayo

Michael Gregoritsch, the matchwinner from the first leg, is on for Freiburg. Vincenzo Grifo comes off.

Elsewhere in the Europa League

18:43 , Marc Mayo

AC Milan are storming into the quarter-finals, leading Slavia Prague 3-0 away from home and 7-2 on aggregate.

Rangers and Benfica are goalless with that tie level, whereas Villarreal have cut the deficit against Marseille to three goals. They lead 1-0 on the night at the break.

So far, so good for the Hammers

18:38 , Marc Mayo

It has been clear from quite early on that Freiburg don’t have the talent that West Ham possess.

The Germans were let off the hook in the first leg, but not here.

Lucas Paqueta’s far-post finish came after a run of consecutive corners piled the pressure on and Jarrod Bowen’s superb second has put them ahead on aggregate.

It’s been a fine night for David Moyes too, with his decision to start Michail Antonio paying dividends.

Get the next goal and you fancy the Hammers to cruise home.

Half-time!

That was a more or less perfect half of football in the context of this tie for West Ham.

West Ham 2-0 Freiburg (2-1 agg.) | 41 mins

18:27 , Marc Mayo

Nice run into the box by Vincenzo Grifo off the Freiburg left but his shot is semi-blocked and Lukasz Fabianski grabs it.

Still, one goal for the Germans turns this tie on its head. Another for West Ham and you’d fancy it to be over.

Freiburg’s defenders were terrified.

Chance for Michail Antonio to chase a loose ball down in the Freiburg half but Manuel Gulde gets across well.

The Freiburg No5 has been the visitors’ only defender capable of mixing it with the Hammers’ frontline.

Up the other end, Maximilian Eggestein places a tame shot straight at the keeper.

Dan Kilpatrick at London Stadium

18:22 , Marc Mayo

Great strength and skill from Bowen. Freiburg's defenders couldn't live with him there. A great way to mark another call-up to the England squad for West Ham's talisman.

West Ham 2-0 Freiburg (2-1 agg.) | 35 mins

18:22 , Marc Mayo

The Hammers aren’t stopping there.

Edson Alvarez battles his way into the box and wins a corner. It’s Jarrod Bowen to take, flicked on and wide at the near post by Tomas Soucek.

GGGGOOOAALLLL!!! West Ham 2-0 Freiburg | Bowen, 32'

18:19 , Marc Mayo

JARROD BOWEN!

A Freiburg challenge is shrugged off by the England attacker, and you just know he’ll make them pay... and he does with a wicked effort from outside the box.

West Ham lead the tie!

West Ham 1-0 Freiburg (1-1 agg.) | 30 mins

18:16 , Marc Mayo

A bit better from the Germans in recent moments, West Ham resorting to clearing long and Michail Antonio has to hold the ball up alone.

He does a good job off Kurt Zouma’s hoof but his cross is cleared.

West Ham 1-0 Freiburg (1-1 agg.) | 28 mins

18:14 , Marc Mayo

Good work by Mohammed Kudus to drop back into the box and snuff out a moment of space for Ritsu Doan.

The Japan international hesitates and has to settle for Freiburg’s first corner of the game.

Tomas Soucek clears.

If West Ham do not progress here, they will look back on that Kudus miss. Superb work from Antonio, who put it on a plate for his teammate.

West Ham 1-0 Freiburg (1-1 agg.) | 21 mins

18:08 , Marc Mayo

Lucas Paqueta is back on, mercifully for West Ham.

The Hammers are also back on the front foot and Vladimir Coufal pops up in the box - his cross is cleared.

West Ham 1-0 Freiburg (1-1 agg.) | 19 mins

18:06 , Marc Mayo

Bad news for West Ham. The goalscorer, Lucas Paqueta, is down and needs treatment.

Looks like his calf.

West Ham 1-0 Freiburg (1-1 agg.) | 18 mins

CLOSE!

Classic Michail Antonio run down the right wing, holding off his defender while forcing his way into the box.

There’s an end product, too, as Mohammed Kudus arrives a little out of step with the cross and he shoots wide.

LUCAS PAQUETA STRIKES!

Another lovely corner by Aaron Cresswell, a header flicks it to the far-post for Paqueta to turn home unmarked.

West Ham 0-0 Freiburg (0-1 agg.) | 8 mins

17:55 , Marc Mayo

More pressure from West Ham as a cross nearly reaches Tomas Soucek, before Mohammed Kudus keeps it alive to win a corner.

It’s an out-swinger from Aaron Cresswell, turned behind well by Manuel Gulde for another. And the Freiburg defender is there to nod this one over - we’ll go again!

West Ham 0-0 Freiburg (0-1 agg.) | 5 mins

17:51 , Marc Mayo

Vladimir Coufal wins and takes a throw-in high up the pitch, which is semi-long and dipping violently as multiple legs are thrown at it.

The keeper has to punch out for a corner, which sees Jarrod Bowen slice a shot over.

17:37

"We felt we needed a slight change, let's see how it goes but we can't throw everything in right away. We have to put them under pressure."

"I think the only thing we can take from [Sevilla] is the crowd, they were magnificent.

“Sevilla were serial winners at that point, it was a big thrill and we have to take a bit of experience and know this game can go to extra-time. We have to be ready for that tonight."

Jarrod Bowen exclusive

17:12 , Marc Mayo

Jarrod Bowen has called on West Ham fans to create another special European night atmosphere at the London Stadium this evening.

“We’ve been here before,” Bowen told Standard Sport. “I think of the Sevilla game [at the same stage in 2021-22] as one, even those first-leg games — Frankfurt at home and Lyon at home and AZ Alkmaar, too.

“When we get that atmosphere going and the stadium is bouncing, it’s difficult for any team to come here and beat us.

“We’re going to need another one of them, we’re 1-0 down with a chance to go into the quarter-final of a European competition, so we’re going to need absolutely everyone.

“We have to be the ones to get the first goal. If we get that first goal, the fans will really think we can go on and get the next one.”

Why are West Ham kicking off early?

17:07 , Marc Mayo

West Ham fans will need to be in full voice much earlier than usual this evening as the game is due to kick-off at 5.45pm GMT.

That’s because due to the number of teams from the British market involved at this stage of the competition and the need for the ties to be split across the broadcast slots.

Both West Ham and Rangers' home tie against Benfica have been selected for the earlier 5.45pm GMT kick-off with Brighton and Liverpool’s games in the 8pm slot.

These teams had never met before this season, and are now on for their fourth match in barely six months.

West Ham wins: 2

Draws: 0

Freiburg wins: 1

Freiburg boss' warning to players

16:18

Freiburg coach Christian Streich has told his players to forget their aggregate lead and treat tonight’s match as a fresh contest.

He told reporters: "At 1-0, the situation isn't much different.

“It's all about what we do on the pitch, how brave we are and what options we give our players with the ball at their feet.”

Throwback: Andriy Yarmolenko fires West Ham into the quarters

16:11

The Ukrainian popped up in extra-time as West Ham downed Sevilla on their previous visit to this stage of the competition - which saw them lose the first leg 1-0, too...

David Moyes looking for Sevilla repeat

16:06 , Marc Mayo

David Moyes is hoping to rally his West Ham players to repeat history tonight.

The Hammers knocked out Sevilla in similar circumstances in the 2021-22 season when Soucek levelled the aggregate score in the first half before Andriy Yarmolenko struck the winner in extra-time.

“It's going to be tough, but we've done it before, and we have to do it one way or another,” he said.

“Our focus is only on how we win, and the performance that we need to put in to do that.

“The biggest memory of a similar situation was against Sevilla, who had won the competition many times. We overcame that challenge, but Freiburg are a good team.

“This one is important because we have to win to get through, and we'll do our best to do that."

Score prediction

16:00

Though an improvement will be needed, West Ham should surely have enough at home to turn things around.

West Ham to win 2-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
