West Ham vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Tottenham’s top-four hopes suffered a blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium. Much has been made of Spurs’ slow starts in recent weeks, but they were in front inside five minutes here, as Timo Werner played the ball across the face of goal and Brennan Johnson, promoted into the starting lineup, provided the finishing touch.

West Ham responded well though and they looked a real threat from a succession of set-pieces, with that unsurprisingly their route back into the match. Jarrod Bowen whipped in a superb delivery from the corner, and captain Kurt Zouma rose highest, turning the ball into the far corner off his back to get West Ham on terms 15 minutes after they had fallen behind.

After the sides went in level at the break, it was the Hammers who started the better after half-time. Michail Antonio forced Guglielmo Vicario into action and the striker then wasted a huge chance to put the home side in front, sending a tame effort straight at the goalkeeper when clean through on goal. Spurs increasingly took control in the final 20 minutes but could not create a clear-cut chance, as they were forced to settle for a draw that leaves them two points behind Aston Villa, who travel to Manchester City on Wednesday night.

78 mins: Kudus and Antonio can’t quite combine out wide, ball bobbles out of play.

Still no sign of a chance from West Ham, Moyes sticking with what he has on the pitch.

Sharp turn from Kulusevski, he’s hauled down as he looks to break though. Both sides doing a good job of stopping dangerous moments by any means necessary.

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

21:50 , Matt Verri

Another frustrating outing for Maddison, who is really struggling to find his early-season form for Spurs despite a big moment for England against Belgium last week.

A decisive 15 minutes or so for Dejan Kulusevski may leave Maddison sweating on his place against Forest at the weekend.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:34 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Van de Ven seems to be the only one who can deal with Antonio.

The striker threatens to get away down the right, but the Spurs centre-back has the pace and strength to stick with him.

Hold up... Antonio is in after shrugging Van de Ven off this time! Just the goalkeeper to beat, tame effort straight at him! Had to score.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:33 , Matt Verri

We're getting towards the time that David Moyes withdrew Michail Antonio at St. James's Park and it saw West Ham lose something in terms of an outlet and a player to hold the ball up.

The trouble is, he tends to start to look leggy beyond the hour-mark.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:31 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Bowen does superbly on the right, skips away from Udogie about three times. All came from a lovely touch as Fabianski lumped it forward.

Paqueta tries to slide Bowen in, ball comes back to the Brazilian and he shoots miles over the bar.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:28 , Matt Verri

54 mins: So good from Johnson, nobody there for Spurs though.

On the right, whips the ball right across the face of goal. Somehow nobody gets a touch - Johnson less than impressed.

Maddison then smacks an effort from distance - great block. This match is really heating up.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:27 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Moyes and Antonio bemused.

The West Ham striker again using his body, but catches Bentancur on the stretch as he lunges to keep hold of the ball.

Yellow card for Antonio.

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

21:25 , Matt Verri

Spurs lost control with the West Ham equaliser and haven't looked close to finding it again since.

West Ham are all over them at the start of the second half, and continuing to look particularly threatening from set-pieces.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:25 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Paqueta on the edge of the area, hammers a strike just wide!

Antonio then holds up the ball really well, Romero too keen and gives away a needless foul. West Ham well on top.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:23 , Matt Verri

Back underway!

21:19 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at the London Stadium.

Crucial goal from Zouma!

21:08 , Matt Verri

Off his back, a bit messy.... but West Ham don’t care.

Zouma got them level within 15 minutes of Johnson’s opener.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:06 , Matt Verri

A good response from West Ham after that early goal.

They've been the better side in the 25 minutes since that goal and have looked a threat at set-pieces in particular.

HT: West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:04 , Matt Verri

There’s the half-time whistle.

Good spell at the end for Spurs, with a couple of corners and a Bentancur shot flashed wide.

Entertaining first 45 minutes. Firmly in the balance - West Ham right in this while they continue to win so many set-pieces.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

21:01 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Paqueta clatters into Maddison, hand out in apology... is not received by the Spurs midfielder. Fair to say he had no interest in that.

Van de Ven then earns himself a booking for stopping a quick West Ham throw.

Two minutes added on.

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

21:00 , Matt Verri

West Ham are finishing this half well on top and making Spurs uncomfortable from a succession of set-pieces. Son has barely been in the game while Maddison is also having a quiet evening.

Lots to ponder for Postecoglou at the interval.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:58 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Guess what? Another West Ham corner. On the other side this time, Ward-Prowse jogs over.

Just the five West Ham players in the six-yard box.

Once more it’s Udogie there to head the ball away though, Spurs have dealt with the last few well.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:56 , Matt Verri

40 mins: West Ham will get another chance from a corner, must to Werner’s frustration.

Right on top of Vicario, gets a slight flick on it with two West Ham players lurking behind him. Crucial touch.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:55 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Kudus overhits a cross into the box, but Bowen brings it down brilliantly and wins a corner. The Zouma chants swiftly follow...

Bowen with another good ball in, Udogie up well at the back post to head it out though.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:53 , Matt Verri

David Moyes has been a bit frustrated by Ward-Prowse's lack of direct free-kick output since his arrival.

That effort was as close as he's come in a while.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:52 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Bowen caught late by Romero, free-kick for West Ham. Is this within range for Ward-Prowse?

Goes for goal, Vicario opts against trying to catch it and instead parries it away. Straight at him near enough.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:50 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Maddison dropping deeper and deeper for the visitors.

Nice switch out to Johnson, who fires a pass into Son in the box. Can’t take it in his stride, ball bobbles through to Fabianski.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:50 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Spurs are struggling to get Son involved.

Maddison tries to do just that, but Zouma swiftly arrives on the scene and muscles the Spurs captain off the ball.

Spurs back on the attack, Johnson whips a ball across the face of goal... Werner doesn’t move. Should have had a tap-in.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:43 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Antonio filling in on the right wing for now, with Bowen taking up residence through the middle.

Spurs threaten to open West Ham up, but Mavropanos hacks the ball away as Maddison looks to burst through.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:42 , Matt Verri

Jarrod Bowen's moving a little awkwardly after scuffing either the ground or a defender's leg when trying to get a shot off a minute ago.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:40 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Rock solid from Van de Ven.

Coufal with the ball down the line, Bowen is briefly away in space but the centre-back strolls over and wins it back. Optimistic West Ham appeals for a foul are waved away.

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

20:39 , Matt Verri

Wretched marking from Spurs left Zouma completely free to turn home Bowen's corner from a few yards out.

The West Ham captain ghosted in from the far post, with Van de Ven and Bissouma nearest but stationary.

The London Stadium has come alive.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

20:38 , Matt Verri

22 mins: That goal has got West Ham going again.

Ball clipped forward, Antonio chests it down on the edge of the box... and then basically catches it as he falls over.

Unlikely to get away with that.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:36 , Matt Verri

David Moyes was asked in his press conference yesterday about the lack of leaders in his side and insisted that while Kurt Zouma was not quite in the Declan Rice or Mark Noble mould, he had done a good job since taking the armband.

That's a big goal from the skipper.

GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Tottenham | Kurt Zouma 19'

20:35 , Matt Verri

West Ham have really struggled in the last ten minutes or so, but Bowen bursts down the right and wins a corner for his side.

And the Hammers are level!

Bowen with a brilliant ball in, Zouma free to flick into the far corner.

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

20:33 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Paqueta barges Udogie over, Spurs full-back gets back up on his feet and tries to continue his run but the referee pulls it back for a free-kick.

Up come the Spurs centre-backs, good position this for Maddison to whip something in.

Not his best, Paqueta makes up for the foul and heads it out.

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

20:31 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Werner has made a really good start to this match.

Again he drives into the box from the left, another dangerous ball put into the middle. Bounces off Maddison and away to safety this time.

Coufal not enjoying himself.

20:29 , Matt Verri

No change in outfield personnel for West Ham tonight but a very obvious change in set-up.

Lucas Paqueta is playing in a much deeper role than in recent weeks, almost where he played for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup.

James Ward-Prowse has been the most advanced of the midfield three.

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

20:28 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Spurs settling things down, content to just keep the ball for now.

Porro changes that with another bright run down the right, flashes a ball into the six-yard box. Nobody there in a white shirt.

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

20:25 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Porro tries his luck from distance, shot flashes just wide of the far post.

Chances at both ends in the opening ten minutes of this match - would be surprised if we’ve seen the end of the scoring.

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

20:25 , Matt Verri

Postecoglou's big selection calls are justified within minutes, as Werner and Johnson combined for the goal after great work from Bentancur.

More evidence that this Spurs side are at their best with two pacey wingers who attack the six-yard box.

West Ham 0-1 Tottenham

20:23 , Matt Verri

8 mins: West Ham corner, as they look to respond immediately.

Vicario unconvincing, ball falls for Kudus and his shot is deflected over the bar. Another corner coming up.

Bowen swings it in again, this time Spurs head it out. West Ham responding well to that setback though.

GOAL! West Ham 0-1 Tottenham | Brennan Johnson 5'

20:21 , Matt Verri

And now Spurs lead!

Johnson into the side and onto the scoresheet.

Too easy from a West Ham perspective. Werner down the left, plays the ball across the face of goal and Johnson turns it in.

West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

20:20 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Big chance for West Ham!

Kudus robs Porro of the ball, and plays a low cross into the middle.

Bowen running onto it at the back post, ball just bounces off him and behind. Think he was put off by Antonio waving a foot at it.

West Ham 0-0 Tottenham

20:18 , Matt Verri

3 mins: West Ham doing a good job in the early stages of preventing Spurs playing the ball through to the likes of Son and Maddison.

Happy to let the centre-backs have it, but no space for the pass through the lines.

KICK-OFF!

20:16 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running in this London derby!

Here we go!

20:13 , Matt Verri

Teams are out onto the pitch, as the rain continues to fall.

Reminder that West Ham came out on top when these sides met earlier this season in north London. Can they double up?

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:11 , Matt Verri

The stadium announcer rather rattled through the West Ham substitutes when first reading the teams out about 15 minutes ago and there was hardly anyone in the ground.

Will be interesting to hear what kind of reception Kalvin Phillips gets when he goes through them again in a minute with closer to a full house.

Tottenham looking to end long wait!

20:08 , Matt Verri

Can Spurs pick up a rare win at the London Stadium tonight?

Dan Kilpatrick at the London Stadium

20:01 , Matt Verri

Van de Ven, back in the XI tonight, is so crucial to way Postecoglou wants his players to play.

Spurs will happily leave the Dutchman to deal with Antonio alone, allowing the rest of their defenders to push forward.

With Johnson and Werner, Spurs have lots of pace in wide areas but there is big onus on Maddison to create.

Postecoglou full of praise for Moyes

19:57 , Matt Verri

Ange Postecoglou believes David Moyes deserves more credit for the job he has done at West Ham, believing the team will “get better” under him too.

"I rate him so highly, he is one of the ones I have always rated highly," Postecoglou said.

"Longevity in the game means something, especially at this level. Whether it was at Everton or the difficult job he had at Man United, he went abroad and has never stopped coaching. I think he has done a brilliant job at West Ham and anyone that thinks otherwise...

"They have some high-quality footballers in that team and I think they're going to get better. I guess it's a bit of today's world we live in where there is always a short-term reflex to everything that happens, but I've got no doubt he is one of the outstanding managers in the game.”

Big night for Son!

19:49 , Matt Verri

The Tottenham captain makes his 400th appearance for the club tonight.

Son made his debut for Spurs in September 2015 - turned out to be a fairly decent £22m purchase!

Moyes: We want to take the game to Tottenham

19:42 , Matt Verri

David Moyes wants his side to be on the front-foot tonight and give the West Ham fans “something to shout about”.

“Over the last three or four years, we've always tried to challenge the big teams at home, and we've enjoyed some really good results,” Moyes said.

“There are a lot of really good teams in the Premier League, with top players, and we always want to take the game to them and give our supporters something to shout about.

“We want to keep the good times coming, and a London derby is something that's easy to get excited about. We're looking forward to it, and hopefully we can pick up the right result.”

Postecoglou backs Johnson to produce more

19:35 , Matt Verri

Ange Postecoglou believes there is much more to come from Brenna Johnson, as he comes into the starting lineup.

Johnson came off the bench at half-time and set up both goals as Spurs recovered from behind to beat Luton 2-1 on Saturday.

"Brennan was super on the weekend," Postecoglou said.

"He's still young, he's developing. He's moved to a big club where there's big expectations when you have a big transfer fee. But for the most part I think he's handled it really well.

"He's another one understanding more and more how we want to play and he's adjusting to it.

"It was always going to be a tough introduction for a young player, moving to a big club for a transfer fee. And it's always harder for attacking players because they are usually measured on one thing: goals and assists. But I think he's contributing in more [ways] than just that."

Spurs are in the building!

Visitors have arrived in east London.

They keep starting slowly, Postecoglou insists he isn’t concerned by that... but Spurs would love a fast start tonight!

Postecoglou shuffles his pack

19:21 , Matt Verri

Three changes for Tottenham tonight - Van de Ven, Bentancur and Johnson in for Dragusin, Sarr and Kulusevski.

No real surprises there, with Johnson rewarded for his bright display off the bench last time out.

As for West Ham, Fabianski comes in for the injured Areola, while Aguerd is not deemed fit enough to make the bench.

Phillips once again on the bench.

Postecoglou expecting more Spurs comebacks

19:03 , Matt Verri

Ange Postecoglou is not surprised by Tottenham's repeated comebacks this season and says they are a result of his team's consistent style of play.

Postecoglou's Spurs have won 22 points from losing positions, second only in the top-flight to Liverpool's 26, and Saturday's 2-1 win over Luton was the fourth time in five home games they have come from a goal down to win.

"It is something that's been consistent throughout my coaching career," the head coach said.

"If you go back right to the very start, all of my teams had that trademark of being able to turn around results or winning games late. When you're so committed to playing a certain way, the score almost becomes irrelevant.

"With a lot of teams, when they fall behind they have to either change their approach or find a different approach or when they're winning they maybe change their approach.

"With us whether we're winning or losing we won't change our approach. Like at the weekend [against Luton], when we concede it's not like the team are going 'what do we do now?'

"We just keep going and when there is that sort of clarity of purpose it makes it easier for the players to look for the solutions in the way we play rather than looking for something that is not a constant in our gameplan.”

In the building!

The Hammers have arrived at the London Stadium.

Team news to come in just under 20 minutes...

Moyes calls for Phillips support

18:51 , Matt Verri

David Moyes has urged West Ham fans to lay off Kalvin Phillips and insisted the midfielder can still make a success of his so-far doomed loan spell.

Phillips’s cursed stint in east London plunged to new depths on Saturday when he was involved in a confrontation with a supporter after giving away a penalty in the Hammers’s dramatic 4-3 defeat at Newcastle.

In a video shared widely on social media, a fan is heard calling Phillips “useless” as he boards the team bus outside St. James’s Park. The midfielder then responds by raising his middle-finger from behind the coach windscreen.

Phillips had been penalised for a foul on Anthony Gordon only minutes after coming off the bench. At that stage, Moyes’s side led 3-1, but the incident proved a key turning point as the Toon roared back to snatch a remarkable comeback victory.

Despite his dreadful form, however, with Edson Alvarez still suspended, Moyes may again be forced to call on Phillips tonight.

“Kalvin's a human being and can do things which we all do at different times,” Moyes said of the 28-year-old’s middle-fingered salute. “What he needs is support behind him, people to help him, and we're going to stand with him help him as much as we possibly can. Obviously, we need all out supporters to give all our players, whoever it is, their support.

“He's fine, he's back training and we've all moved on from the weekend. We've got a big game coming up and we're getting ready for that now.”

Postecoglou: Spurs will be in title race next season

18:41 , Matt Verri

Ange Postecoglou expects Tottenham to be in the Premier League title race next season and says he will not “let the club rest” on where they finish this campaign.

Postecoglou has consistently refused to rule Spurs out of this season’s title equation, but with nine games to play, including tonight’s derby at West Ham, they are 11 points behind leaders Liverpool and effectively battling with Aston Villa for fourth place.

The Australian has previously warned it will take time to build a squad capable of competing for the biggest honours.

But asked if he expects Spurs to be in the title race in 12 months, Postecoglou told Standard Sport: “I hope so, or why am I doing what I’m doing? That’s why I came to the club.

“As somebody said to me last week, ‘Just do your job, Ange’. And my job is to try to bring success - and if you don’t think you’re going to be in the title race in 12 months’ time, then I don’t know why I’m here.”

Moyes searching for answers

18:31 , Matt Verri

With a characteristically thrilling 3-3 draw at home to MK Dons on Monday, Notts County assumed the novel position of being both League Two's best attacking side and its worst at defending; 80 goals scored, 79 conceded, 159 in total across just 41 matches.

Unsurprisingly, the Premier League does not quite have an equivalent, but West Ham are perhaps the closest thing, showcased in Saturday's 4-3 reverse at Newcastle.

Few teams in the division boast a frontline as talented and dynamic as that of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta, who along with Michail Antonio all provided at least one goal or assist in sending the Hammers into a 3-1 lead.

However, no team outside the relegation zone, except Brentford, has conceded more goals than the Hammers' 54, the last three of which came in the space of 13 minutes to power the Toon to their dramatic late win.

Given the conjecture around David Moyes's future revolves largely around a perceived lack of entertainment, that is a peculiar state of affairs. It is a puzzle Moyes has wrestled with for much of the campaign, yet the solution seems no clearer.

Stage is set!

18:21 , Matt Verri

Just under two hours to go until kick-off at the London Stadium - imagine there will be a few more fans in attendance by then.

Standard Sport prediction

18:13 , Matt Verri

Both clubs are looking good in front of goal but creaky at the back.

Spurs were beaten at home by West Ham earlier this season and will be desperate for revenge, but they may have to settle for a point.

A 1-1 draw.

Tottenham team news

18:06 , Matt Verri

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has no fresh injury concerns to contend with.

Micky van de Ven returned to the bench for Saturday's late win over Luton but is likely to come back into the XI at the expense of Radu Dragusin, while Brennan Johnson pushing for a start after a decisive display from the bench.

Dejan Kulusevski is the most likely player to make way for the Wales international, which would leave Spurs with two speedy and direct wingers in Johnson and Timo Werner either side of captain Heung-min Son.

Postecoglou could also consider freshening up his midfield following another below-par display from Yves Bissouma at the weekend.

Rodrigo Bentancur is an option to come into the side but the Uruguayan is arguably more suited to a more advanced role.

Richarlison came through another cameo against the Hatters unscathed but may have to settle for a place on the bench again, while Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon remained sidelined long-term.

West Ham team news

17:59 , Matt Verri

West Ham will not have first-choice goalkeeper Alphonse Areola available tonight.

The Frenchman suffered a groin problem during the first half of Saturday’s dramatic 4-3 defeat at Newcastle and, despite initially being able to carry on, was forced off at the break.

“He’s hurt his groin and at the moment it looks like he’s unlikely to start,” Moyes said in his pre-match press conference. “We hope it’s not too serious, but he’s not going to be available.

“We don’t see it as being something too serious, so hopefully he might be back quite quickly.”

Areola’s absence means Lukasz Fabianski is set to deputise in goal but Moyes has no other fresh injury concerns ahead of the London derby.

Centre-back Nayef Aguerd is also back in training after missing the trip to St. James’s Park but it remains to be seen whether Moyes chooses to send the Moroccan back into action.

Edson Alvarez remains out as he serves the second match of his two-game suspension.
