SINGAPORE — Commuters who were in a westward MRT train on Friday (20 May) evening had to disembark at Kembangan MRT station after white smoke was seen coming from one carriage.

In response to queries from Yahoo News Singapore, President of SMRT Trains Lam Sheau Kai said station staff guided commuters to disembark at the station and board the next train as a safety precaution.

“Our staff did not receive any reports of commuters who needed medical attention,” Lam said.

The affected train was withdrawn from service to undergo checks.

“We have confirmed that the smoke emission was due to a leaking air-conditioning compressor that released Freon gas. We apologise for affecting your journey,” Lam added.

In a widely circulated TikTok video of the incident at around 5pm, a group of commuters are looking in the direction of the end of a carriage. One commuter is seen waving her hand apparently due to the effect of the faint smoke in the carriage. The video ends with SMRT staff guiding commuters to disembark from the train.
