Chloé Lukasiak is sharing how her mother Christi truly feels about her “living on the dance floor.”

In a conversation with PEOPLE while promoting Lifetime’s Dance Moms: The Reunion in April, Lukasiak, 23, says her mom's opinion on her being on Dance Moms has “largely remained the same” over the years.

“I think that's due to the fact that I've expressed my constant and consistent gratitude that I experienced it the way I did.” says the former competitive dancer. “I know she felt a lot of guilt at the time.”

Lukasiak adds that she hopes her mother, 47, “feels a little bit better about everything” five years after the reality TV show ended in 2019.

“I hope, if anything, she feels less guilty now because I am a huge believer that everything happens for a reason, and I'm really happy I had the experience I did, because it shaped me into who I am. I feel very thick-skinned, strong, empathetic toward others and hard working,” the Teen Choice Award winner continues.

“I wouldn't want to have had a different experience,” she adds, concluding with, “So I hope, if anything, she feels a little bit better about everything rather than carrying around this guilt.”

The mother and daughter rose to fame on Dance Moms, which followed children and their moms on a Pittsburgh-based competitive dance team as they trained and competed nationwide, when it debuted in 2011. On the show, the kids learned choreography from Abby Lee Miller.

Lukasiak and her mother were original members of the team and took part in seasons 1 through 4 before leaving. The pair later returned to the show for season 7.

Lukasiak recently graduated college from Pepperdine University in California with a degree in creative writing, started her own dance competition company, Elevé Dance Competition, and is drafting her first fiction novel.

In May, she and fellow Dance Mom alums Jojo Siwa, Kendall Vertes, Kalani Hilliker, Paige Hyland and Brooke Hyland starred in the Lifetime’s reunion special.

The six reflected on crucial moments in the reality show, divulged their relationship with Miller now and updated viewers on what they have been up to since the show ended half a decade ago.
