The now iconic green Versace gown that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards almost didn't have its moment.

Lopez's then-stylist, Andrea Lieberman, encouraged her not to wear the dress due to other celebrities having been photographed in it months prior.

"It was a dress that other people had worn already. My stylist was like, 'Please don't wear it. Somebody else has worn it.' I was like, 'Well, you bought it, and it looks the best, so I'm going to wear it.' And so I did. And it caused quite a stir," explained Lopez, reflecting on 17 of her biggest fashion moments during an interview with Vogue.

"I think it's always been a collaboration with all the stylists that I've worked with," she continued. "I worked with Andrea Lieberman for many years, and then I worked with Rob [Zangardi] and Mariel [Haenn] up until the present, and it's always been a collaboration."

The multi-hyphenate compared the gown's impact to that of Marilyn Monroe's white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch.

"I guess every generation needs its iconic kind of Marilyn dress, and this is that dress for this generation," said Lopez. "Why it became that? It was just a moment when the wind blew open, and I walked out onto the stage, and it just kinda happened."

That same year, Lopez got just as much attention with her all-white Video Music Awards outfit that consisted of a bedazzled tank top, low-rise jeans, and bandana.

"This is a favorite Halloween costume of a lot of people," the singer said, noting that it was not her first option.

"Again this one of those things where I had this big gown and everything," she explained. "[Sean "Diddy" Combs] at the time, who was called Puffy, was like, 'You need to just wear a pair of white jeans and a T-shirt.' And I was like 'What?' But I kinda liked it, so I put it on."

Listening to her instincts is something Lopez has carried on to this day, including during her Saturday Night Live appearance earlier this month.

She noted that her black jacket, pants, and white top outfit worn during her performance of "Can't Get Enough" was something that was "thrown together."

"I just kinda liked them all together. I started kind of mix and matching things," explained Lopez.
