The Witcher’s Cassie Clare on making the universe more inclusive

The Witcher season 3, part 1 spoilers to follow.

The Witcher has released the first part of the third season on Netflix, giving fans more magic, monster slaying and Henry Cavill in that wig (for now, at least).

The season also gives fans a bit of queer representation, through the character Philippa Eilhart (Cassie Clare), and the romance between Prince Radovid (Hugh Skinner) and Jaskier (Joey Batey).

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Clare opened up about bringing a bit more inclusivity into the universe.

"I love it," she said. "I just love how, as the world expands, it becomes even more inclusive and representative.

"Everybody can sit and watch, and find somebody, and be like, 'Oh, that's like me,' or, 'I love when I watch it, and I’m learning about other cultures and other experiences. I’m learning through other people's storylines that don’t relate to me.' And that's something I really enjoy.

"You know, the Witcher world is such a fantastical place, but, at the heart of it, it does reflect the world that we live in. And you can watch it, and be like, 'That's me.'"

Digital Spy also spoke to Batey about Jaskier's queer storyline in a lengthy interview, and he explained how it was pitched to him, how he went about trying to bring it to the screen, and what it was like working with his on-screen romantic partner. He also teased a little bit about where things might go in season 3 part 2.

The Witcher seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Netflix. Season 3 volume 1 is out now, and volume 2 premieres on 27 July 2023. Spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin is also streaming on Netflix.
