SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old female tenant who quarrelled with her landlord lied to policemen that he had molested her in the shower, a court heard.

Lovedeep Kaur claimed that her 26-year-old landlord had squeezed her breasts, slid his hand down to her buttocks and told her to have sex with him.

As a result, Simranjeet Singh was arrested and spent the night in a police lock-up.

At the State Courts on Wednesday (19 February), Kaur, an Indian national, was jailed for 10 days.

She pleaded guilty to one charge of giving false information to a public servant.

Victim’s wife saw inappropriate text

The court heard that on 24 June last year, Kaur bumped into Singh’s wife at the void deck of an HDB Block along Whampoa Drive at about 9.30pm while she was on her way home.

“The accused showed the victim’s wife a text message which she received from the victim a few weeks ago and the contents of the said message was implying that the victim likes the accused,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Jaime Pang.

Singh’s wife got upset and went home to confront him. Singh tried to explain his intentions to his wife and got angry with Kaur and a quarrel broke out.

At about 9.40pm, Kaur called the police hotline to say, “I am having a dispute here now. It is personal issues”.

Culprit lied about being molested

When policemen arrived, Kaur lied about Singh molesting her while she was in the shower. Due to her allegations, a 37-year-old senior investigation officer arrived at around 11pm to interview her.

“During the police interview, the accused provided information which she knew to be false to the (investigator) stating that her modesty had been outraged by the victim, who used his left hand to squeeze both of her breasts, slid his hands down to her buttocks and told her to have sex with him, whilst she was in the shower,” said DPP Pang.

“The accused claimed that she rejected the victim’s advances and the latter left the bathroom when he heard some noise of someone opening the main door,” the prosecutor added.

Victim placed under arrest

As a result of Kaur’s allegations, Singh was placed under arrest for molestation and brought to a police station. He was released the next afternoon.

Kaur decided to come clean when she was interviewed again by the investigator at about 1.15pm that day.

For giving false information to a public servant, she could have been jailed for up to a year and also fined up to $5,000.
