Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a Peel Regional Police car hit a woman in Brampton on Friday evening, leaving her in life-threatening condition.

In a news release Saturday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the collision happened in the area of Central Park Drive near Hilldale Crescent at about 6:15 p.m. The scene is at the edge of Chinguacousy Park.

Speaking at the scene Friday, Const. Tyler Bell said the officer was travelling north on Central Park Drive when he struck the woman. The officer was not responding to a call for service at the time of the collision, Bell said.

The pedestrian, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition.

The collision took place as the Greater Toronto Area was under a weather advisory alert with heavy snow expected to arrive.

"Obviously that's a consideration for the Special Investigations Unit to investigate as to whether or not weather played a factor," Bell told reporters at the scene.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU said.

The SIU investigates cases of serious injury, death and allegations of sexual assault involving police, as well as cases where police discharge firearms at people.

Central Park Drive is closed between Howden Boulevard and Hilldale Crescent as the investigation continues. Bell said he anticipates the area will be closed into Saturday.

Anyone who may have information on the incident is asked to contact the SIU.
