World leaders unite in France to remember pivotal WWII Normandy landings
On June 6, numerous world leaders participated in celebrations in France to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, a key Allied operation in World War II. Attendees included King Charles III of Great Britain, US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska.
Reuters published photos from the ceremony.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the veterans and world leaders during the ceremony, The Guardian reported on June 6.
"When we look at war coming back to our continent, when we look at people questioning the values for which we fought, when we look at those who want to change borders by force by rewriting history – let us stand with dignity and look at those who landed here,” he said.
“Let us have their courage. Here, the president of Ukraine – your presence here today shows us this in a very forceful way.”
Macron also thanked the Ukrainian people for their courage and fight for freedom.
“We are with you and we will not waver.”
Commemorative events will be held for three days, from June 5-7.
The event will take place exactly 10 years after the 2014 celebrations of Normandy landings gave a start for so-called Normandy format - ultimately fruitless attempts to settle the war launched by Russia against Ukraine through the mediation of Germany and France.
