Wowowin host Willie Revillame won't run in next year's Philippines elections
Wowowin host Willie Revillame made it clear that he will not run in the elections next year.
The TV personality said that he doesn’t need to be a candidate, and that he only wants the popular show to continue so that he can’t help more people.
“Hindi ko po kailangan kumandidato. Hindi ko po kailangan manalo. Ang kailangan ko ay makasama kayo, dahil sa puso ko, sa isip ko, dapat laging ang mga Pilipino, kayo ang panalo. Ang programang ito na Wowowin ay ginawa para sa inyo,” Revillame said during his television show on GMA Network on Thursday (October 7).
(Translation: I do not need to be a candidate. I do not need to win. What I need is to be with you, because in my mind and heart, Filipinos should always be the winners. The Wowowin show was made for you.)
Last June, President Rodrigo Duterte urged Revillame to run for senator.
"Matagal na tayong 'di nagkita pero palagi kitang naaalala dahil gusto ko sanang maging senador ka (We haven't seen each other for a long time but I always remember you because I wanted you to be a senator)," Duterte said in a to video message to Revillame.
The president even said that they are willing to hold Revillame’s slot open until the last minute.
For his part, Revillame admitted on Thursday that he knows little about the law.
“Dapat marunong kang magbasa ng batas. Dapat marunong kang gumawa ng batas, ‘di ba?” he said.

“Wala akong alam sa batas. Baka ho lait-laitin lang ako doon ng ating mga mahal na senador na magagaling. Hindi man lait-laitin, siguro baka wala naman akong maiaambag na batas, di ba? ...Wala rin akong naiambag na knowledge about the law dahil hindi ho ago abogado,” Revillame added.
(I am not knowledgeable about the law. Senators may just mock me there. Even if they don’t mock me, maybe I won’t be able to contribute anything to the law, right?... I also won’t be able to contribute any knowledge about the law because I am not a lawyer.)
The deadline for submitting certificates of candidacy for next year's elections was October 8.
