WWE event undergoes major name change WWE

In March, WWE announced that the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments would be making their return, with a special Premium Live Event named after them.

In an announcement during Raw, WWE revealed that the King and Queen of the Ring event would take place on May 27, live from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

But last week WWE sent out a tweet stating: "The May 27th Premium Live Event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will now be WWE Night of Champions!"

There was no reason given as to the name change, however PW Insider has reported that the decision was made because WWE felt that the Night of Champions name would mean more to an international audience.

WWE's last Night of Champions event was in 2015. Historically it has seen most of, if not all, the major championships in WWE defended.

As for the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments, WWE has not confirmed whether these have been scrapped.

King of the Ring was established by WWE back in 1985, with the first winner being Don Muraco. The last King of the Ring tournament took place in 2021, with the finals being held during the Crown Jewel pay-per-view event in Saudi Arabia. Xavier Woods was the winner.

In 2021 WWE announced the Queen's Crown tournament as the equivalent to King of the Ring for the female roster. The tournament was won by Zelina Vega, with no follow-up being held in 2022.

WWE's next PLE is Backlash which will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. While no card has been announced yet, Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny has been revealed as the host of the event.
