Last week, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a travel advisory ahead of planned rallies taking place around the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur at the weekend. According to MFA, there was a possibility that “limited and isolated skirmishes might take place. There may also be traffic disruptions and other disturbances that will impact travellers.”

The various opposing rallies were staged around Malaysia’s decision to back away from ratifying a UN convention on eliminating discrimination, as well in support of the convention.

The rallies also came amid an upsurge in cross-border tensions, as it emerged that Malaysian ships had repeatedly made unauthorised incursions in Singapore territorial waters. Malaysia also announced it would be “reclaiming” control of airspace over Johor.
