The first trailer for the new series Batman: Caped Crusader, starring Yellowjackets actor Christina Ricci, has been released.

The Prime Video show, which is produced by The Batman's Matt Reeves, Star Wars director JJ Abrams and Bruce Timm, will focus on "reimagining" the Batman mythology.

Ricci, who plays Misty Quigley in Showtime's acclaimed mystery drama, is set to voice the role of Catwoman/Selina Kyle in the upcoming animation.

The 10-episode series will premiere on the streaming service on August 1.

"Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear," reads the official logline for the series.

"Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human — the Batman.

"His one-man crusade attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications."

The thrilling trailer begins with a news reporter asking the all-important question: "What do you think about the Batman?"

As an unhinged bomber continues to wreak havoc on the streets of Gotham, the city's hero tries to uncover the secrets surrounding the mysterious attacks — much to the disdain of citizens.

"I'm frightened. This whole city's gone to hell in a handbasket," says one resident, with the mayor adding: "This man is not a hero, he's a criminal. His time in Gotham is up."

Batman's investigations soon spark trouble as his enemies rear their heads. "We could be looking at an all-out gang war on the streets of Gotham," he later admits.

Ricci's character, both a friend and foe to Batman, is described by the show's producers as "a blithe and pampered heiress whose family lost their fortune after her father was imprisoned for embezzlement.

"Despite having the silver spoon yanked from her mouth, Selina refuses to quit living in the lap of luxury and becomes Catwoman as a 'fun' way to maintain her lavish lifestyle."

Ricci will be joined in the cast by Hamish Linklater, Jamie Chung and Diedrich Bader, with the trio voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman, Dr Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn and Harvey Dent/Two-Face, respectively.

The show will also include Commissioner Jim Gordon and Clayface, with more characters likely on the way.

Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on Prime Video on August 1.
