Authorities in New York City have launched an investigation after a dismembered leg was found lying alongside one of the city’s subway tracks.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) shared in a release with PEOPLE that the body part was discovered on the northbound No. 4 subway line between the 167th and 170th Street stations in the Concourse neighborhood of the Bronx at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Police said the leg was found "along the roadbed" and "removed" pending an investigation. The appendage is now in the hands of the medical examiner, who will work to identify the owner of the body part, according to WNBC.

The NYPD did not provide any other details about how the leg may have ended up on the tracks or what may have happened to the person the leg belongs to.

Sources told WPIX that it was discovered by a train conductor who had been doing a sweep following a snowstorm on Friday night. The conductor reportedly stopped the train before it hit the leg and then informed the police.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed to News 12 Bronx, that after the dismembered leg was found, there were service disruptions to the No. 4 subway line. However, those issues were eventually resolved by Saturday afternoon.

The gruesome discovery comes a few months after a slew of deadly incidents on the New York City subway. Earlier this month, one person was killed and five others were injured after a shooting at the Mount Eden subway station at the intersection of Mount Eden and Jerome Avenues in the Bronx.
