Yvonne Lim shares that Vivian Hsu helped to find a tutor for her son in Singapore; still worried about his ability to adapt to education system
The local actress had previously shared her concerns over her son's education once the family moved back to Singapore from Taiwan.
Local actress Yvonne Lim is back in Singapore. And her concerns about her son’s education might not be unfounded.
In a recent interview with Shin Min Daily News, Lim, 47, shared that the principal of the school said her son had to undergo a test - to assess his standard - before they decide which level he’ll start at.
She had previously told the Chinese daily paper that when the family moves back, she was worried her eight-year-old son “can’t keep up” and that they might have to consider “dropping him a level” from Primary Four.
Since she had concerns, her celebrity friend - Taiwanese actress-singer Vivian Hsu - helped her look for a tutor in Singapore. Hsu, who ended her nine-year marriage to her husband in December 2023, is based in Singapore.
Differences in Taiwan and Singapore education
A tutor, who taught Hsu’s son, also lent their assistance to Lim. Lim said, “The tutor can teach my son English virtually. I really have to thank the teacher, and most importantly, I have to thank Vivian Hsu.”
Apart from English, Lim’s son also has to adjust to learning Mandarin in Singapore. The difference between both regions is that Taiwan uses traditional Chinese characters, while Singapore uses the simplified Chinese characters.
Additionally, Singapore focuses on hanyu pinyin (also known as the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet) while Taiwan uses zhuyin (Mandarin Phonetic Symbols).
Lim said to Shin Min, “I haven’t found a Mandarin tutor at the moment. As a mother, I am anxious. I’m worried about my son’s ability to adapt. I don’t know if he is able to integrate into the education system.”
Education concerns aside, they have at least settled their accommodations here, living in a condominium close to the central area. Their unit is currently undergoing renovations.
Lim shared that they will keep their home in Taipei so her husband, former Taiwanese boy band member Alex Tien, can have a place to stay when he’s over there running his family business.
