Zac Efron says “Iron Claw” costar sang “High School Musical ”songs on set: 'One of the most fun days'

"It felt like a high school party," Efron says.

Zac Efron couldn't break free from his breakout role while filming The Iron Claw thanks to some on-set shenanigans.

The actor revealed that his costar Stanley Simons pranked him while filming their wrestling drama by singing High School Musical songs on set, and he made fun of Simons right back by saying he wasn't "hitting it."

"Goddamn it, Stanley!" Efron said during a Q&A on Sunday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I do remember that being one of the most fun days of filming that we had. Filming a house party could go one way or the other. It's a lot of people that are stuck in one room for many days, it can be kind of daunting. But this one was just electric. It felt like a high school party in a really rad way. It was really special."

Simons added that they only had "half a day" to film that particular scene.

"One of the first times I got to see you perform that song was as we did the oner that pulls us into the party," Efron says.

"And it kind of became the theme of the movie a tiny bit," Simons said.

A24's The Iron Claw stars Efron and Simon along with Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson about one of wrestling's most iconic dynasties. The true story focuses on four of the six Von Erich brothers — Kevin (Efron), David (Dickinson), Kerry (White), and Mike (Simons) — who built a wrestling empire in the 1970s and '80s, led by their domineering father Fritz (Mindhunter's Holt McCallany). But even as they rose to international fame, the family struggled both in and outside of the ring, as five of the brothers (all except Kevin) died young, succumbing to health issues, tragic accidents, or suicide. The back-to-back deaths sparked rumors of a family curse — a cautionary tale of how sometimes success can exact a brutal price.

"It just doesn't seem like this could all happen to one family," Efron previously told EW. "There's a huge element of the movie that's, of course, about wrestling and the showmanship aspect. But really, at its core, this movie's an incredible story about family, love, loss, and ultimately the triumph of a man who tries to break the cycle of this crazy curse."

The Iron Claw hits theaters Dec. 22.
