Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña's new series Special Ops: Lioness has released its first trailer.

The new Paramount+ show, which also counts Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman among its cast, focuses on the Lioness Engagement Team of operatives as they attempt to wipe out a terrorist organisation.

Going by the first trailer, viewers are set for a thrilling ride as we get a taste of the explosive action to come.

"We locate the wives and daughters of these high-value targets, and we place an operative close to them… and then we kill the target," Saldaña's station chief Joe explains at the start.

However, things do not go smoothly, as one operative appears to have gotten in too deep, with their cover blown and the organisation threatened with exposure.

The series also stars Laysla De Oliveira as young marine Cruz Manuelos, while Kidman plays Kaitlyn Meade, the CIA's Senior Supervisor who has had a long career of playing politics.

Speaking last month about the characters, Saldaña told Vanity Fair: "They each represent a different sort of generation in this program.

"One is just starting, so there's this freshness and passion. Then you have me [as Joe], who’s in the middle of it all. [Joe's] been here long enough to be burned out but long enough to understand the mission and be resolved with what needs to happen."

Special Ops: Lioness comes from Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan, and also stars Teen Wolf's Jill Wagner, This Is Us' Dave Annable, LaMonica Garrett, Stephanie Nur and Jonah Wharton.

Special Ops: Lioness is set to premiere on July 23, streaming on Paramount+.
