'Comprehensive perspective needed for discussions on population'

Population strategies must be discussed “from a comprehensive point of view”, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday.

TODAY reported that Lee said at the annual Chinatown light-up ceremony that population issues must be looked at in the context of many factors.

Lee told reporters: “It's a Dragon Year so I hope they will be a few more babies, maybe more than a few more. I don't think we have reached the point of specific extra measures yet but it is an issue which we would have to discuss from a comprehensive point of view.

"(It is) not just about how many babies Singaporeans are having but also our population, the trends, our economy, ageing, space, all the different factors which we have to take into account when we talk about population. It is something that we would like to talk about this year."

On a separate note, Lee also commented on the upcoming Budget, saying that the Grow and Share package in last year’s Budget had proven helpful, and that the Government will look at how things are for this year’s Budget, reported TODAY.
