'Argo' and 'Silver Linings Playbook' top Critics' Choice Awards

"Argo" and "Silver Linings Playbook" were voted Best Film and Best Comedy at the 18th Critics' Choice Movie Awards, held by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) on January 10, 2013.

The films by Ben Affleck and David O. Russell beat "Lincoln," which was the odds-on favorite. That film, which was nominated a record thirteen times, picked up three awards: Best Score, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.

Ben Affleck, who was overlooked for an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for "Argo,' got the blessing of around 250 BFCA critics, thus following in the footsteps of last year's winner Michel Hazanavicius. His thriller set against the backdrop of the Iranian crisis was also awarded the respected Critics' Choice Award for Best Picture.

"Silver Linings Playbook," which received acclaim at the Toronto film festival, won the award for Best Comedy. David O. Russell's feel-good movie is now the odds-on favorite to win the Golden Globe in this category on January 13. The film's actors Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence were voted Best Actor and Best Actress in a Comedy. "Silver Linings Playbook" also took home the Best Acting Ensemble Award.

The BFCA members praised "Skyfall," which won the award for Best Action Movie. Daniel Craig won the award for Best Actor in this category. In the women's category, Jennifer Lawrence staved off competition again and won a second Critics' Choice Award for "Hunger Games."
