    SPP, WP offered NCMP seats

Three Non-Constituency Member of Parliament seats have been offered to the best-losing opposition candidates. (AFP …

The Elections Department has announced that the three best losing constituencies at the General Election will be offered the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats.

The three seats are offered to -- Singapore People's Party Lina Chiam who contested in Potong Pasir Single-Member Constituency (SMC), Workers' Party (WP) Yee Jenn Jong who contested in the Joo Chiat SMC and a member of the WP's East Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) team.

Chiam and Yee were the top two with the highest percentage of votes while the WP East Coast GRC team received the third highest percentage of votes amongst the unelected Opposition candidates.

The Returning Officer has sent a letter to the WP East Coast team, asking them to select the member that will receive the seat and they will have to respond by 17 May.

In last Saturday's polls, the WP East Coast team comprising Gerald Giam, Glenda Han,  Mohamed Fazli Bin Talip, Png Eng Huat and Eric Tan garnered 45.2 per cent of the votes.

They were up against the People's Action Party team represented by Lee Yi Shyan, Raymond Lim, Lim Swee Say, Mohd Maliki Bin Osman and Jessica Tan.

WP worked hard to get 2 NCMP slots, so does SPP with Potong Pasir.
Like the GRC, NCMP cuts both way.
Use wisely, it is a platform to raise profile, hone public speaking skill, learn basic law making process and train one guts.
Steve Chia did it before and improve.
So the slots should be given to people with the MP potential, leadership, vision and good narrative skill.
NCMP is not an option before the election as it will weaken the will of the voters to cast for opposition.
But now, it should be left to the candidates themselves to consider seriously.
If WP do not want to take it, it may not be offer to another party. If it can be transfer, I support Nicole Seah as she has MP potential [after all, GCT said Kate Spade has the potential to learn it all in 3 years]. So does Gerald Giam, Tony Tan, Dr V, KJ, Benjamin Pwee, etc. These are opposition A team. Leaders are groomed, not born.
For SPP, this is a consolation prize for CST whose 27 yrs of hard work garners SPP many supporters. If they do not take it, their supporters will be disappointed.
So consider it, select the NCMP carefully and made use of the opportunity wisely.
The goal is to abolish the NCMP, not by debating its merits, but by turning out more than 9 oppositions elected MP in 2016.

Gerald Giam should be a good choice.

For SPP, it's highly important to groom the next generation, so that even if CST & his wife are unable to context 5 yrs later. At least there is one credible candidate PP residents can look up to =) Mr. CST & his wife can be advisors for these people.

I think if the NCMP participates in debates and speak up for the people frequently in the parliament, he or she will sure get more support from the people just like sylvia lim.
They gain experience in discussion of current political problems too. I think NCMP schemes is useful in some sense. Hopes Lina Chiam can make use of it and speak up for the people, Nicole Seah popularity is the highest.... they should offer her a seat..

NCMP is a good opportunity to sharpen your rally and political skills, and prepare for next election. 知己知彼, 百战百胜: Know your strength/weakness, know your enemy's strength/weakness, you will win in every war. If you don't take this opportunity to get a closer understanding of your future competitor, how do you think you can win the war. All Sun Zi's strategies of war circled and targeted at the heart (心). The heart is the secret place where you cannot know it from someone else, read it from the news, nor guess from one's saying, you need to interact with the person as much as you could. WP should know this every well.
Think twice before you reject it.

Totally Agree! Though its a awkward position you are in, with rights to debate but no power to vote... only those who had gone through period of difficult time will emerge as a greater person and finally conquered! Gogo our brave opposition! In 40% of singapore's heart you guys are HEROS representing the people who are struggling with monthly expenses! Unlike the Incumbent "yes man", who cant think of anything more than their bonuses and pay hikes.....

      To SPP and WP,

I think you should take up the NCMP offers to increase your popularity and exposure. If you really do not want it, you should still accept the offers and use the $15,000 per month for charitable purposes. Those who benefitted from your generosity will be grateful to you and your parties.

I don't think NCMP is $15k a month. I remember it is half.
      • royang 1 year 0 months ago
sure or not ? i think it's only 3000 or less but I am very sure it is not close to 15000.
If not nobody with the right mind should rejected it

Correct amount is $1,600 just slightly above so that they cannot claim workfare...LOL

Of course all the NCMP seats offered should be taken up.
      These are the reasons :

      1) The Opposition Party can maintained a presence both in government, parliament and the public eye.

      2) Good training ground for the opposition candidates for future election and holding of office. Also able to see how the gahmen and ruling party function and the behavior of the ministers.

      3) The high salary pay can also be used for the party's purpose and finance future election costs. Why save this cost for the gahmen as it is the people's income tax money too.

      4) Chance to debate any arising issues and policies in Parliament from the grassroot level and bottom up view.

Mr bulldog,Go check the payout. Its much lesser than what you think.
As for your point 4,everytime opp bring out their views from bottom they alway kana terok terok by the minister.
Dont believe me,you watch more parliarment debate
      • Fei 1 year 0 months ago
All the more reason why we cannot have a lop sided democracy. It will be like pre-war Germany where the chancellor overthrew the ruling party and had monopolized parliament. The chancellor could declare himself absolute ruler and nobody could or would object.

I hope WP can even the scale and make us a first world democracy. And to do that they would need to fill in the NCMP seat to groom the new and improve.
      • SG Panda 1 year 0 months ago
They should go in. If they kana terok terok, PAP's rating in GE2016 will be terok terok as well. Who know, more ministers could be vote out as well.
    • Ack C  •  1 year 0 months ago
Win or lost doesn’t matter, is already over? Voting is secret. Nobody will say the truth to you that he voted who or so. He can said I voted PAP, but in actual fact, he voted the opposition and vice versa. Some even said that I want the opposition to win a few seat in the Parliament, he voted PAP for his area. Why? His comment is that so as my HDB flat price can go up! You can see some commented as “ Phew! PAP won, my flat will cost higher again!”
Now, if really want to discuss will be, “just open your eyes and use your heart to feel for the next 5 years.”
Conscientious is the word. Whoever you have voted for, you will know by yourself. If
      1. In the next 5 years, there are rules such that the GST for basic necessities commodities and Medical are 0% or free from GST other still remain as 7% GST no increment.
      2. FT criteria will evaluate, job priority for Singaporean.
      3. The ruling party will not increase their pay and benchmarking their pay with bench marking their responsibilities.
      4. Public Transportation pricing for Singaporean citizen with special rate. (Special cards)
      5. PUB pricing will be reduced or maintain for Singaporean regardless of inflation except those rented out. Singapore rented out houses must be registered and approved
      6. HDB flats and private housing are for only citizens and not PR. Speculation for HDB flat and houses are not right. PR and foreigners only allow to buy condo though it may not right, this is the only choice to cool the whole housing infrastructure. Speculation for condo maybe high, that is the best choice to do that. It will help the poor Singaporean can have a proper home or housing without outside speculation influences.
      If you have voted the Opposition;
Either one of it comes true; this will be enough for you! You have really giving a good sign and a helping hand to help our own fellow brother and sisters regardless of race, language or religion without selfishness.
If you have voted the PAP
If all of them do not come true; don’t complain, you are asking for it! You have failed to save your descendents and loved one! If you or your love one does not have a job or being retrenched later, you know who to blame! Is yourself and not the ruling party, because you have voted them!
If you are only thinking about your properties pricing, you are real selfish one in Singapore! Only think about yourself and not as a whole! You can be good or even better now, but you will feel bad one day when your friend or relatives or even your descendents cannot afford a proper HOME!

Upgrading is not that important for me. I used to live in Potong Pasir and now I am in Aljunied. I, personally, am not against George, but I am all out for having opposition parties in parliament. As far I as I could observe, every PAP MP is just a "wallflower in the chamber of parliament of a dumb cow" (to borrow the phrase from Dr Toh Chin Chye).
If majority of Singaporeans place self-interest above national interests, then the country has lost its soul (adapted from another quote given by Dr Toh Chin Chye).
      • Ack C 1 year 0 months ago
        Angie, I fully agreed!
Anyway you will see the L-empire will building up stronger and stronger! Their descendents will be coming for the next election!
No one is born to be a Leader!
Yes, we need courage to give them a chance to show their capabilities as long as they serve the nation whole heartedly. Most of them will say, ”give he/ she 5 years to show his/ her capabilities? How many five years do we have?” Just ask yourself, do you know him/ her before she show her face as a candidate? Does PAP allow the other party to knock their area’s residents door to door before the election say 3 years before hand? No, is the answer. Of course you will not know them!
Politicians should be humble and listen to voices! There will be no good answer, but they can have a win-win situation in majority! What is brain storming for?
Though this year the Opposition Parties lost most of the seats, it shows that they are united as a whole! They did not dilute their power which is a good sign of improving! Bravo to you all! If the next election, they can transform another party which is all in one party, there will be no fear to all Singaporean! Most of the Singaporean afraid that too many opposition parties in Parliament will cause havoc and danger to Singapore’s reputation in the world which is the trust of ruling the country. If the next election will be PAP and only XXX ( compromise between the opposition parties to create a new name XXX, and elect a leader to lead) , it will be a good fight again! If you want to help our needy Singaporean, serve with whole heartedly for our nation and get most of the seats in the Parliament, I personally think that this will be the best solution! Transforming all in one party will show to all Singaporean that you are a real fighter for our country to voice in the Parliament and it will be the fear for PAP!

Do anoyboby know if one day the L-empire will fall maybe 80 yrs fm now, then who will own GIC & Temasek Holding & it its subsidiaries. Will it be pass on to the new Govt as the setting of these Companies is fm Singapore Reserve.

If the East Coast constituency now has 5 MPs serving, there should be 5 NCMPs given to them, as in Potong Pasir 1 MP for PAP so 1 NCMP seat given and 1 MP for Joo Chiat to qualify 1 NCMP seat for this in proportionate ratio, calculating in percentages and so it is the same 45.2 % that each in their own right, namely, Gerald Giam, Glenda Han, Mohamed Fazli Bin Talip, Eng Png Huat and Eric Tan, has won in the percentage of votes.

so altog 7 NCMP seats to be offered as there are 7 MPs now standing in these 7 constituencies.

I hope the PAP know the rules of the GRC game,
while they are still at it.

The best arrangement I see for the balance 3 NCMPs is as follows:

      - WP & Mrs Chiam reject the seat. ( NCMP to WP is not significant anyway.)
      - Therefore it will go the next better loser which is NSP, Marine Parade followed by SPP, Bishan-Toa Payoh.
      - NSP can take 2 seats but it will be best that they take up 1 seat for Nicole Seah, leaving 2 seats to be taken up by Chiam S T and his right hand man Benjamin Pwee.

This way the Parliament will have 3 opp parties with the following line up:
      - 6 x Elect Opp from WP
      - 1 x outspoken NCMP from NSP
      - 2 x NCMPs from SPP (1xveteran + 1xoutspoken SPP potential)

GE and parliament are different ball games. Most popular losing candidate may not be the best choice for parliament. No guarantee that they don't "talk @#$%" and sabo entire opposition.

Please work together to send candidates whose credibility will not be called into question. Already play with handicap so must be more kilat.
    • J-Le  •  1 year 0 months ago
      This is fishy.

Why only 3 out of 9 Non- elected MP seats were given?

Why the Other additional 9 seats not reported? Who sets these ideas and who must approve? What is the restriction and condition? Like no GLCs/GICs/ civil servants can take this . . .etc

Anyway, now the Parliament has 87 Elected seats+ 9 non- elected+ 9 others= 105. This political game is getting difficult to understand.

I hope Lina Chiam, Yee Jeng Jong and a WP candidate maybe Gerald Giam will take on the NCMP post offered. They could voice the people's concerns and also work diligently at the constituency level for the betterment of the people of Singapore.

We nee you all to be our voices. As far as many Singaporeans are concerned the opposition made the PAP come out and admit their mistakes. If you could this not being in Parliament, what more you could do being in Parliament. The PAP are now caught in a catch 22 situation. They have to look like a Democratic country to the world and at the same time they need to put a lid on their errors and greed. You the opposition can educate the world of the sufferings of the people of Singapore.

      Majullah Singapura!!! Majullay Rakyat-rakyat Singapura!!!

It is already not level playing field. Already PAP do gerry mandering with eleciton boundaries. Already mainstream media amplify for them. Already PAP election resources use PA, RC, etc Already elected MP kena do meet the people session at void decks. There is so much injustice that I am really angry with the ruling party.
So I think do not have to disadvantage oppo more by not taking the NCMP up. They need to hone the skills of the party members, sharpen their knife, get involved and get ready for the next election battle. So what to do, take it up it has more credit than bad.
For as long as oppo want to be in the (political) game, no choice got to play by winner's rule. So take the advantage of it.

Nicole Seah should walk into parliament as a full fledged MP next round, PAP is not in love with her as
she caused their votes to slip in Marin Parade and else where. She should go to U.S. and do a masters degree in histroy/communication studies and return in turn to work on the ground. If in parliament now, she will face verbal and emotional cannons repeated ad nauseam.

    • HBT75  •  1 year 0 months ago
I hope Lina Chiam will decline the NCMP offer. She seems like a kind hearted lady but we need someone who can articulate issues in Parliament esp if you are representing the opposition parties. She will be lost there. Her performance in a pre election TV debate was embarassing. Given limited numbers of Opposition MPs against 81 PAP MPs, the Opposition MPs need all the good people who can speak well in their ranks. Else she is just taking up the seat without any meaningful role. As for WP East Coast team, they should put forward Gerald whose performance was highly commendable in the same TV debate. He is young and has mush potential. With more exposure (like Sylvia Lim), his profile can improve further and be a force in the next GE. Eric Tan is not presentable, too old and I fear he will just ruin the good profile of the WP.

My wish is to see nicole seah in parliament but what the heck, the wp east coast team is quite strong i think.

I want Lina Chiam to take up the NCMP post because it pays so well. $15k a month for the next five years or at least until the next election is a lot of money. It will serve also as a semi-retirement allowance for Mr and Mrs Chiam. Beside, she don't have to run a constituency with all its headaches.

Having said that, I think she will be very lost in Parliament. If she is there, don't expect her to make much speeches.

The WP must take up the other two NCMP positions offered. Many reasons but the most important ones are a) by participating actively, they will help to boost the Workers Party presence in parliament and b) it will give them valuable experience.

Are we aware Nicole Seah Party came in 4th position and if any of the top three do not take up the NCMP position it will be offered to her party. And if the stars are all aligned in the right places, we may well see her in parliament as a NCMP.

There is another way for her to get into parliament and that is for the parliament to invite her as a Nominated MP (NMP). NMP serves only two and a half years I belive and they must be chosen by a Special Select Committe of parliament. Lets see how this play out.

its a gd training ground for the less experienced opp members. IMHO, beats investing $15k in an empty tin hoping that u may discover some gem out of it aft 3 yrs.

I hope Lina Chiam will consider giving her seat to the younger generation Nicole Seah. At her age, she doesn't sound well and acceptable to a population of people from young and old in general. (Translate in Cantonese) "10 draw got no one stroke" But the young Nicole "One Draw all the way to million miles" That is the different. She is young and will make mistake but many will forgive her. As leader need to trial and error before they become good. If Mrs Lina will to make mistake, no one is willing to forgive her just like her speech "I am different I want to be my own" That speech have cost votes but if Nicole will to said that, she is easy to be forgiven. Is all about age. Let the younger generation work for Singapore. Is time for that and let go and trust the younger generation.
    • Star Gazer  •  1 year 0 months ago
I definitely support Nicole for NCMP.

This shall present opportunity for Nicole polish herself and shine ever more for SINGAPORE.

      Is this another 'dilemma'?
Whatever you choose, go with the HEART for SINGAPORE.
