    Malaysia investigates alleged abuse of S'porean duo at customs

    UPDATE

    The Johor Immigration Department says it has completed its probe into the alleged mistreatment of two Singaporeans by immigration officers at the Johor Bahru customs checkpoint last week.

    But when asked to comment, department director Mohd Nasri Ishak said, "Please wait for the decision by the department headquarters and the (home) ministry."

    He declined further comment, reported Malaysian news portal Malaysiakini, as he said he did not want to contradict anything the headquarters might say.

    However the case -- which saw two Singaporean ladies being strip-searched and ordered to do squats in the nude while being detained -- has sparked widespread outrage among Singaporean netizens.

    Since it was first posted late on Tuesday evening, the story has been shared on Facebook over 3,000 times and drawn over 700 comments.

    Some have called for a boycott of shops in Johor Bahru while others called for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to launch a proper investigation into the alleged abuse.

    Yahoo! Fit-to-Post reader SH commented, "As consumers and tourists, we should vote with our pockets, boycott poor service shops and countries which do not appreciate our tourism dollars."

    Another reader Koh wrote, "Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs doing something about this ? This is a common trick of Malaysian Immigration to extort money from Singaporeans. Why do we need to go to JB to save money. Patronize a country that obviously do not welcome you?"

    Yet others questioned why the two ladies ventured up to Johor Bahru for supper at such a late hour.

    Reader Patriot wrote, "1.30am going to JB for supper just two ladies ? Must be out of your mind right? Singapore got so many night haunts for supper and yet you choose JB."

    The two Singaporeans in question were reportedly detained by Malaysian law enforcement officers in Johor Bahru early last Thursday morning after they were accused of entering Malaysia illegally.

    The pair were also ordered to strip and do squats with their hands on their ears for 10 times when they were sent to a detention centre.

    The ordeal happened when Lim Lili and Zhan Tingting (not their real names) drove across the Causeway for supper at about 1:30am. When they reached the Malaysian customs checkpoint, both women inadvertently did not get their passports stamped.

    According to Lianhe Zaobao, Lim said she had entered a lane that displayed a green light which signalled that the lane was in operation.

    Lim recalled seeing that the lane had no immigration officer at the counter and it was at this point that they didn't get their passports stamped. Zhan then alighted to purchase a "Touch N Go" prepaid card to pay for their entry into Malaysia.

    As it was their first time experiencing the new biometric scanner at the counter, Lim used the intercom and tried to ask another officer for help. Both waited at the counter for five minutes before they decided to move on as Lim thought that there would be another counter for them to scan their fingers.

    But instead, they drove into Johor Bahru without getting their passports stamped and fingerprints scanned. Realising something was wrong, Lim drove her car back to the customs to obtain an entry chop for their passports.

    However, when reached the customs at 2am, they were accused of entering Malaysia illegally and questioned by Malaysian law enforcement officers.

    "When my statement was taken, both of us tried to explain ourselves and requested for them to check with Singapore's immigration department to check their departure timings and CCTV footage to clarify that once we knew there was a mistake, we quickly turned back," said Zhan.

    The officers then curtly informed them of the offence and punishment, emphasising the RM10,000 (S$4,069) and jail term.

    Both women were detained in a room until 5pm on 10 June and were only allowed to make a phone call each.

    One of them called a friend while the other spoke to her brother, who contacted the Singapore High Commission in Malaysia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    "Somebody with a higher rank came and started speaking to us in Malay. A translator told us if we were willing to accept a fine of RM3,000 (S$1,220) to resolve the situation," said Zhan.

    "And because we were so tired, we agreed to pay the fine and we signed an agreement that was in Malay," Zhan added.

    Officers led the two women to an ATM machine to withdraw cash to pay the fine. But the women received another shock when the officers suddenly said that they will be sent to a detention centre in Pontian district and will be detained for up to 14 days.

    Lim then asked the officers, "I thought we already settled the case?"

    They were later handcuffed and sent to the women's division at the detention centre. Lim and Zhan met a female officer who ordered a strip search. Both women were made to strip and do squats with their hands on their ears for 10 times before they were allowed to change into their prison uniforms.

    Zhan said: "The place was dirty and smelly, the roach-infested room was two-thirds of the basketball court, no bed, four wooden walls, with 50 people in it."

    "We were treated like criminals even before we were pronounced guilty, it was humiliating. Most of the detainees were Filipinos and Indonesians without passports. We were the only Singaporeans."

    After a night in the centre, the officers woke them up at 5am to do the Islamic morning prayers.

    She said in the span of 24 hours, besides eating and praying, we were stuck in the room. When it was time to eat, we did not have forks and spoons and ate with our hands. We did not dare to finish eating, but the rest of the detainees told us to finish because if we did not, the officers will punish us."

    At the detention centre, the two of them were bitten by mosquitoes and bugs the whole night. Zhan's hands and legs had red spots and her whole body hurt while Lim's back and neck were bitten, and her skin was red and itchy.

    Both women were detained at the centre for 24 hours before another immigration officer transferred them back to the Malaysia customs and detained them for another six hours.

    Zhan said that other immigration officers mocked them and asked if the detention centre was like a five-star hotel.

    On Friday night, an official handed both woman a warning letter and informed them that they will not be charged, jailed or fined.

    When Lim went to retrieve her car, she saw it was badly scratched and damaged. They were also told by an immigration officer who handled their departure proceedings that they would not be able to enter Malaysia easily next time.

    Looking back, Zhan acknowledged their mistake but said, "This is only a trivial mistake. Does it warrant a need to detain us at the detention centre?"

    The pair angrily added: "Next time even if you invite me over to Malaysia I wouldn't want go in!"

    They were worried that the incident would affect their jobs, and wanted to remind their friends to be more careful when travelling to Malaysia.

    Under their lawyer's advice, the pair might seek compensation from the Malaysian authorities.

    This is not the first time Malaysian authorities have been accused of abusing their power. In November 2005, another woman was made to perform nude squats.

    According to police, the nude squats are meant to dislodge any hidden illicit drugs but the incident led to the formation of an independent commission, which subsequently recommended that the practice be stopped.

      Let me tell you my story where the Malaysian Immigration officer tried the same trick on me as saying i did not stamp the last on exit out. Following several argument as i did they sent me to the officer where there they accuse me for overstay. I know they are up to trap me for something I did not do. Finally upon checking for the out stamp I found the out stamp was just nice stamped on top of another previous out stamp. They tried to fool me but luckily I was able to prove their mistake for not stamping properly at the empty space instead of stamping on top of another stamp and finally manage to get myself out of the hell there.
      Please all of you if you want to travel across the causeway do check and double confirm your passport stamp upon entry and also do the same upon exit of Malaysia. If you are rushing for time and do not want to wait to check your passport stamp then you are there, please pay attention at the immigration officer at the counter and witness their stamping right in front of your eyes. We Singaporean tried to rush most of the time but a reminder to all please do not do that in Malaysia.
      I can prove you my passport stamping

        Malaysia police shame, but feel no shame, really disgusting, outrageous. Malaysia treat people like in mediaval Saudi Arabia, and Aghanistan. Malaysia police and customs workers, can join these mediaval uncivilzed lands. Malaysian police think they are like Indonesian mob Islamist terrorists, rioting and killing minorities and minority religions. Malaysian police and customs are uncivilized goons behaving like in Islamist terrorists in mediaval times, killing and persecuting other religions and minority races. Shame on Malaysin police and customs.

        ATTENTION ALL FELLOW SINGAPOREANS
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        These few weeks, Malaysian Customs have come out with all their stupid ways n atitudes. The same old methods n problems which they do it on purpose. Please be careful again and also check and check again. All our passports and white cards must be chopped going in / out of Malaysia. If there is no officer, pls go to another counter n get the officer to chop yr passports n white cards. Otherwise, they will punish u with no reason.
        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
        REMEMBER: CHANGE YR MONEY TO RINGGIT 1ST...... Do not give S$50 notes to them. Just give Rm$50/- notes to them instead for "fine summon" when u meet the police squad. Always3 pay them in RM$; Always ask them for their names & badge nos?; which police stations? Their police car n motorbike nos? If they ask u to pay in S$, u tell them that u dun hv enough for makan. Otherwise they pay for yr makan later on. DO NOT PANIC... Never sign any documents in Malay words. Talk to them in English and Not Malay language.
        ~~~
        Remember these brilliant ideas n tell all friends abt it. Remind yrself again & again b4 stepping into Johor customs whether u are going by bus, by car, by boat or by flight. U will never go wrong again.

        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
        I am truly sorry for our girls who jus gone there. Our PAP government should step up an agency to look into this matter and should clear these problems once n for all. Specially we should get hold of Malaysian government to have joint bi-lateral on passport with no custom officers to be passed thru' systematically only for our Singaporeans n PRs.

        The one that take the RM3000 is not the one that issue the warning letter. This is a further prove that the RM3000 went into the official own pocket because the "Ah kong" dunno and still say never fine them.

      Before you go to Malaysia make sure you read the very, very fine prints on the embarkation cards. "Enter at your own risks. Passports may not be stamped. Pages can be torn off. Immigration officers might not be present at the booth even when the light is shown green for
      you to proceed. When arrested be prepared to have large sum of money in S$ to give to the arresting officers. Do not waste your time reporting to your own embassy. All cases will be classified as NOD (No Offence Disclosed) therefore no action will be taken. REMEMBER YOU
      ARE NOT WELCOME HERE"
      So fellow Singaporeans if you still insist of visiting Malaysia, please don't complain if you are being harassed by their officers. THE BOLEHLAND.

      Though Johor is only half an hour's drive away and all the hype of shopping etc....i have made myself a promise never to go there ever since 1990 ever since i was threatened and robbed twice clearly in front of the immigration areas just at the entry point. Unbelievable and all the officers did was turn a blind eye and pretended not to see. I told them then i was robbed and they just smiled away and told me to take a lift back on a singapore registered car. What a shame and yet till today we still hear of such silly activities. Imagine another instance then when i drove my car in the officer told me i cant bring in some tapes i left in my car and told me to pay a fine of S$150 which he took with a smile and then told me to drive off. Rubbish.......Since then i decided thats it

        Having read all the news reports - I am surprised that many SGs still queue for hours to visit JB just to be abused. Sadly, it is difficult to say who is honest/crooks. I know many Malaysian ppl - extremely nice ppl. But I also know that many elements target SGs in JB. When I drive through - I go straight north, never stopping in JB.
        Incidentally, this squatting in the nude is nothing new. Our own Customs gorrillas do the same - there was even a ST Forum letter from a woman who had fingers inserted up hers to check for drugs - this was in the 1980s.

      A learning lesson for us to remember. Always remember get your passport stamped upon entry and stamped upon departure if you go to a foreign land. If there are no officer around even when the counter light is green, do not attempt to drive in without your passport stamped. Even if you have the Malaysian Automated Clearance System (MACS) sticker, applied for frequent visit within a year, always check its validity and make sure it is valid before you enter the country. Once expired, remember to fill up the disembarkation/embarkation card and get both your passport and the departure portion of the card stamped. And make sure the immigration stamp is clear for us to read the conditions. Also, make sure your passport is in order such as existing pages before and after your passport is stamped by the foreign immigration officer. Should there be any discrepancy after your passport cleared, check with the officer who stamped your passport or their immigration office for assistance. I guess nothing much can our Foreign Ministry and mission do other then to stay in touch with our citizens who are detained, as the foreign authorities have every valid reason to detain a foreign suspect. Usually they will assist you to engage you a lawyer if you need one, and stay to keep in touch with you of the progress of your case. We were told to be aware of what we should do each time we enter a foreign land for a visit or a tour.

      Even if the women were guilty, this is NOT the way to treat them.
      No immigration officers in sight... Driving across the border in a car, no less, and no police spotted them?! Demanding for cash to pay up a fine and 'escorting' them to the ATM for money... Stripped search... This sounds like the plot for The Hangover 3!
      And this report did not mention what the checks with the S'pore Immigration and CCTV offered up?

      Southern Johore state are the most crime infested zone, even my malaysian friends dare not loiter around, if necessary we do a quick refill at a well lit Kios and carry on our Journey. Its a place of uncertainty, you may never know what will happens next.

      We do not want to generalise them, there are nice people too. However there are also a high percentage of crooks in uniform, they dislike Singaporean and racist. If you are a chinese a small issue will be blown out of propotion and they will "suck you dry " and "EAT You Up " .
      Don't go to JB unless you had to!! They are WOLF and you are sheep, you have no match for them.

      Iskandar Development Region in Johor will never make it. It's all bullshit by judging the way they threat Singaporen.

      I am a Malaysian, but I agree that LKY was right when he said that Johor is nothing but a place of "kidnappings, muggings and car-jackings". We can certainly add to the list -- rife corruption, bribery, extortion, daylight robbery and theft. Go ahead. Prove me wrong.
