Japan's bullet train operator keen on High-Speed Rail

Four major Japanese companies have collectively started groundwork prior to bidding for the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project connecting Singapore to Malaysias capital city, according to media reports.

The Japanese consortium, made up of the East Japan Railway Company (JR-East), Sumitomo Corporation, Hitachi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was formed a year ago and plans to bring a system similar to Japans Shinkansen.

US food supplier OSI Group said Monday it had begun laying off more than 300 workers at a Shanghai plant shut down by Chinese authorities over expired meat sold to fast food giants.

OSI said 340 people would be made redundant, both direct employees and contract workers, at Shanghai Husi Food Co., a statement said.

Australia's government is seeking broad new security powers to combat what it says is a rising threat from militant Islamists, the prime minister said on Monday, on the heels of sweeping counter-terrorism raids last week.

Under the tough legislation, which Prime Minister Tony Abbott said would be introduced into parliament this week, it would be a crime for an Australian citizen to travel to any area overseas once the government has declared it off limits.
