Card-based board game Dicetiny wants to be Hearthstone for Dungeons & Dragons fans

What do you get when you put together a team of former Archeblade developers from South Korea with a love of card and board games? You get the four-player online cooperative RPG board game, Dicetiny, of course!

When Codebrush Games ran into financial woes and had to cease development of fighting game Archeblade, two artists, two programmers, one level designer, and one game designer decided to form the company Fakedice. Fakedice started in July 2014 and has not looked back since.

Recently showcased at Gamescom 2014, Dicetiny is a fantasy game centered around four players on a board. The game has each player in the shoes of a specific race and class working together to finish an adventure, and they must make full use of each others’ skills and abilities to get to the end.

Battle in Dicetiny is done with cards, which can be collected at the end of every adventure. It’s similar to Hearthstone in the sense that you have to wield a unique deck, but its gameplay and storyline are a bit more reminiscent of the West’s Dungeons and Dragons tabletop RPG.

“Our developers are huge fans of Hearthstone and the game is influenced by that. Our goal is to appeal to fans of RPGs, card collection, and board games,” said Mike Lee, speaking for the team.

A game like Hearthstone is a good thing for us, because I think before Hearthstone the [card] genre was not really big. I think Hearthstone changed it to a mainstream genre.

Apart from giving the board game genre a more interactive board, with different areas for combat, resting, picking up quests, and buying stuff, Fakedice is also aiming for humor in Dicetiny. Not much of the storyline or quests can be seen in the current gameplay trailer, so we’re looking forward to updates on that.

Dicetiny is targeting a Kickstarter in early October, with an early access release coming this winter season. The full game is expected to cost $15 and will launch in Summer 2015.
