Escalator at Toa Payoh MRT station catches fire

An escalator at Toa Payoh MRT station has been shut down after it caught fire and spewed smoke on Tuesday morning.

An SMRT spokesperson told Yahoo! Singapore that at around 9:10am a fault occurred on an up-riding escalator at the concourse level of the station. The escalator was immediately closed for repairs.

"Our team of engineers were on-site at around 9:20am, and are investigating the cause of the fault and preparing to carry out the repair," said the SMRT spokesperson.

As a safety precaution, the down-riding escalator beside the faulty escalator has also been shut down.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the fire was put out by the station staff using two fire extinguishers. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The escalator is currently undergoing repairs and investigations are ongoing as to the cause of the fault.
