Facebook to press play on integrated music streaming service: rumor

In as little as two weeks, Facebook is rumoured to be turning the volume up on music streaming service called “Facebook Music.”

According to a report by Forbes, European-based music streaming service Spotify will be deeply integrated into the social networking site enabling users to play millions of songs from Spotify’s library through Facebook.

“It has yet to be decided if the new service will be called ‘Facebook Music’ or ‘Spotify on Facebook,’ wrote Parmy Olson for Forbes, “but it will only be available for Facebook users in countries where Spotify has a presence, excluding the all-important United States.”

Spotify users can already share music with their Facebook or Twitter friends by sending them a link to favorite tracks or playlists, but the new deal “will include a function that lets Facebook users listen to music simultaneously with their friends over the social network” wrote Olson.

An integrated music streaming service seems like a logical next step for the company which is already well on its way to becoming “a walled-in internet within the internet” media hub.

The social network recently teamed up with Warner Bros. Pictures to enable built-in streaming of blockbuster movies like Inception and Harry Potter.

However, during a one-on-one chat with Publicis CEO Maurice Lévy at the e-G8 forum in Paris Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg clearly stated that “We don’t have the DNA to be a music company or a movie company.”

Spotify PR manager Sophie Cazaux explained Spotify’s relationship with Facebook in an email to Relaxnews without confirming or denying the rumor: "We have a good relationship with Facebook in that we have done an integration on Facebook Platform that has been valuable in terms of driving engagement with the Spotify service. We're continuously working together to make the social experience on Spotify the best it can be and welcome relationships with any company looking to innovate by building more social value into the user experience."
