International box office: 'Madagascar 3' wins top spot

Despite the competition from the Euro Cup, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, the most wanted film worldwide this weekend, drew $75.5 million across 28 countries, as well as winning the top spot in the US with $60.4 million.

The third installment from the animated franchise debuted at No. 1 this week in most of its opening markets, including France, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But its biggest wins were in Russia ($16.4 million), Brazil ($11 million) and China ($10.4 million).

The family-friendly 3D animated threequel about zoo animals trying to return home to New York City via the circus features the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jessica Chastain.

The 3D threequel's attendance was released in only five European markets, where the football matches affected the box office, with attendance dipping 30% to 50%.

In second, Prometheus in 3D starring Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender, made $39.2 million in 50 territories in its second week of release for a total of more than $141 million.

The sci-fi horror story, loosely connected to the director's 1979 hit Alien, took the top position in the UK and Australia. In debuted in the US in the second spot, earning $50 million. Next week it expands to Brazil and Mexico.

Slipping into third place, Men in Black 3 in 3D collected another $38.3 million from 79 markets in its third weekend for a worldwide total of $487.6 million, surpassing the series sequel.

The sci-fi comedy costarring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, reached No. 1 in Japan and No. 2 in the UK. Its biggest box office this weekend was China with $7 million.

Ranking fourth is Snow White and the Huntsman, which took $24.6 million from 52 territories, bringing its total to $182 million.

The action-fantasy, inspired by the fairy tale and costarring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, opened in Cambodia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. It debuts in France, Russia and Japan this week.

In fifth was Marvel's The Avengers, earning $7.8 million in 54 markets during its seventh weekend. The superhero hit is approaching revenue of $1.4 million worldwide.
