Korean MOBA Pirates: Treasure Hunters is hitting open beta this fall

Games like Dota 2 and League of Legends are great, but let’s face it: they just don’t have enough pirates. I mean sure, there’s Gangplank, the Dota 2 pirate announcer, and Heroes of the Storm has a ghost pirate ship. But is that enough pirates? No, it is not. Thankfully, Korean publisher Netmarble is bringing some swashbuckling to the MOBA genre with Pirates: Treasure Hunters, and here’s the really good news: an open beta is coming this fall.

Before you get too excited, keep in mind that for the time being, the game is still limited to players in Korea. In fact, there’s no word yet on whether the game will be available in English at all! But given that it has an English title and that it seems to be doing well in Korea (a two-week closed beta there this month attracted 210,000 players), I’d say it’s likely only a matter of time before the game weighs anchor on foreign shores.

And I have to say, I hope that happens sooner rather than later, because the game looks quite interesting. In the trailer below its MOBA roots are obvious, but you will also notice that it includes vehicle combat and a bit of vertical gameplay. The game (which was actually developed for Netmarble by Spanish devs Virtual Toys) is also free-to-play, so whenever it does make its way out of Korea, it’ll cost you nothing to team up with your shipmates and set sail for mayhem..
