LTA to investigate Circle Line breakdown

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be investigating the four-hour disruption of the Circle Line that affected almost 27,000 commuters on Tuesday.

Specifically, LTA will determine whether SMRT’s current maintenance, preventive and corrective frameworks need to be improved and how the transport operator can identify and isolate the cause of future disruptions speedily, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Thursday.

Speaking to members of the media at the sidelines of a morning event, he said he has called for a thorough investigation to the Circle Line disruption, reported The Straits Times.

A power fault saw train services on the Circle Line between Dhoby Ghaut and Marymount stations disrupted on Tuesday. SMRT said the power fault prevented train services from starting.

As stages 4 and 5 of the Circle Line open on 8 October, identifying future disruptions is especially important as a similar disruption would affect more commuters, said Lui.

The minister also said it was too early to determine whether SMRT will be penalised but noted that authorities will not hesitate to take action if investigations show the breakdown was due to a fault by the operator.
