IT glitch causes OCBC service outage

UPDATE

The cause of an OCBC service outage was attributed to an IT glitch, said OCBC.

"About 9am this morning, our IT team discovered that our core banking system could not properly connect to our various front-end banking systems. As a result, services at our branches and ATMs, as well as our Internet and mobile banking platforms, were affected," said OCBC chief executive officer, David Conner.

Conner added once the problem was identified, OCBC alerted customers through message and updates on their website, at their ATM machines and branches as well as on Twitter.

All customer data was protected during the downtime.

"... We will identify the cause of the technical problem with our core banking system and install appropriate measures to prevent any recurrence of this incident," said Conner.

On Tuesday morning, OCBC customers could not make transactions through the bank’s ATM and Internet banking channels due to an outage.

Many customers had earlier taken to discussing the issue online and tweeted to the bank's Twitter account to ask for updates and clarifications.

At 12:42pm, OCBC tweeted: "Our ATMs have resumed operations. We expect other services (branch, internet & mobile banking) to be up & operational by 1.30pm today."

All banking services were restored by 1.15pm.

Adeline Wong, an OCBC spokesperson said, "We want to assure them that throughout the period of service disruption, all customer data was protected."

The bank has apologised for the inconvenience caused.
