RIP Lee Kuan Yew: Ben & Jerry’s Ice-Cream Giveaway Postponed

[UPDATE]

The opening celebrations of Ben & Jerry’s new scoop shop and the ice-cream giveaway on 31 March have been postponed as a sign of respect while the nation mourns the loss of Singapore’s first prime minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

A later date in April will be announced for the opening, according to a rep in an email Tuesday afternoon.

Don’t say we didn’t tell you.

Ben & Jerry’s is opening its first ever flagship Scoop Shop in Singapore at 313@Somerset’s Discovery Walk — the open-air strip connecting the mall to H&M at Orchard Building — on March 31.

As part of the deal, the ice-cream chain is giving out free scoops of ice cream on opening day from 12pm to 8pm.

Expect flavours such as Turtle Cheesecake and Seven Layer Coconut Bar, which are only available on opening day. The first 1,000 in the queue will receive merchandise by B&J along with their free scoops.

The new shop boasts an expanded menu including 18 ice cream flavours. The retailer is planning to source goods locally — they are getting baked goods and herbs from social enterprises SCORE Catering under the Yellow Ribbon Project and Edible Gardens City.

Also, the flagship will host a benefit every month on a Tuesday, where 20% of sales go towards social mission partners during the 7pm – 9pm event.

We’ve yet to hear about Ben & Jerry’s annual Free Cone Day event (last year, it was held on April 8) so take this as a precursor to the next one.

So now, you know. But do your friends?
