Scientists confirm direct link between bowel cancer and red meat consumption

A new report described as "the most authoritative ever" to confirm the link between red meat and the risk of developing bowel cancer has experts around the world sounding the alarm on keeping meat consumption to a minimum.

The report is part of the Continuous Update Project (CUP), a compilation of 749 scientific papers studying the link between diet, physical activity, weight and colorectal cancer that's been ongoing since 2007. The report was entitled "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective."

The project is overseen by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research.

The recent addition of 263 new papers confirming the same message moved the two groups to issue a strong statement Monday, warning the public to reduce their consumption of red and processed meats.

Experts also concluded evidence that fiber-rich foods reduce the risk of bowel cancer has become stronger since the publication of the initial report in 2007. They deemed the evidence sufficient enough to strengthen the conclusion from "probable" to "convincing."

Similarly, just as physical activity was found to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, excess body fat -- especially around the waist -- and alcohol consumption were deemed to increase the risk of onset.

As part of the review, experts recommend that people consume a plant-based diet that includes fiber-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and pulses like beans.

Scientists also recommended limiting weekly meat intake to 500 g -- roughly the equivalent of five or six medium portion of roast beef, lamb or pork -- and to avoid processed meats.

Every week, colorectal cancer claims the lives of 320 people in the UK, 73 lives in Australia, 175 lives in Canada and 24 lives in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, another study published last October in the British Medical Journal online, found that almost a quarter of bowel cancer cases could be prevented in the UK if people followed a healthy lifestyle that included physical activity and healthy eating.

Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK.

For a better sense of portion size, the National Health Service offers the following guideline and recommendations:

    A Big Mac: 70 g
    A 5oz steak: 102 g
    An 8oz beef steak: 163 g
    A large doner kebab: 130 g

They also advise better portion control by swapping extra meat helpings with extra vegetables and downsizing servings. Instead of a standard burger, for instance, choose a chicken, fish or veggie burger. Better yet, try to institute a meat-free day.

My late father was a butcher who was always brought back fresh meat for our family to consume it, mutton is his favourite meat. He died at the age of 87 involved in road accident..He was declared as healtheir man by our family doctor.

My grandfather and father were butchers, our daily meals consist of more pork and less veggies and they lived until 105 and 88 years old respectively. Both died of pneumonia.

Those poor old women who don't know exercise or hardly exercise, smoke, eat anything including pickled canned veggies, can live until 90++.

Those white collar workers who exercise, healthy diets, join aerobic/yoga classes, jog regularly, non-smokers, give up their NRICs in their 50s/60s.

I think is STRESS that kills. More $$$, more Stress.

I am just a layman and not an expert on food/nutrients so I hope you will bear with me.

I notice that in many restaurants where "Red Meat" in the form of steak is sold, some customers always prefer to have their steak "very rare". Sometimes you can see the blood from the steak oozing onto their plates. Can any expert advise me if eating "Red Meat" in such form is bad and should be avoided? Is this the reason why eating too much "red meat" can lead to bowel cancer?

BTW, on TLC Channel, one will be alarmed and disgusted to see what Andrew Zimermane (the fat bald-headed guy) and Anthony Boulderine ( the thin guy) eat. (I think I may have spelt their names incorrectly, pardon me). Sometimes, these guys eat all sorts of exotic meat raw and blood from the slaughtered animal is drunk without being boiled. I am just wondering when will these guys get bowel cancer!

Perhaps, eating steak "very rare" may be the trend in the West, but it may not be suitable for our environment and our life-style.

Anyway, one man's meat is another man's poison.

We have been eating chicken eggs since our ancestors time, everyone know that its is good for health. Remember more than decade ago the reseacher found that chicken egg is bad for our heart because high in cholesterol, they advised us to minimise when consume it. Nobody bother about it.
Now the sale s of chicken eggs is most, on top of the list.

What about "man meat"? Can the girl eat that and still avoid colorectal cancer - just as long as don't swallow?

Eat lean meat is OK, but not the fat. Not only can cause cancer , but clogging of blood vessel.

Dont listen to doctors/scientists/politicians, not 100% - give a discount of what you heard by 60 to 70%. All the disease created by scientist in the labs sonsor by machines seller, drug companies to hook-wind everyone. These groups of people will tell you many things that they will not try. One word of advise, be moderate in what you do or eat. Do a lot of charity and touch the people with your love. It is God who gives us breathe of life, without it we died regardless of your health condition. Atheist/Gay are in choot with these same group who thinks of 3 things: power, greed and pleasures.

As long as you eat anything, which you carve for, in moderation, then everything should be all right.

I found that poor people are normally got long life than rich people because they can't afford to consume red meat almost everyday. They only can afford cheap food like vegetables.
Some of the poor people think the standard of living is very high to afford that they found it is meaningless to afford to live long life until 80 plus...but end up they still can managed to do so.
Maybe you can go to such places like Macperson and Chinatown area to find out more from those poor old folk what did they eat per day. =D

My late father died in 1973 of colorectal cancer. He had about 40 cm of his large intestine
removed. He attributed this to eating too much of red meat. He has at least one meal
of char-siew everyday and very little of vegetables.

I think this article about "Bowel Cancer" merely highlights about the root cause and prevention.

But the article failed to mentioned the key point that only certain group of people with a genetic disorder are more likely to get some form of cancer.

Hey i'm no doctor, but i know i am right if you have done enough fact searching through the internet.
