Teen pleads guilty to lesser charges in Downtown East murder case

One of the 11 youths who had been accused of the alleged murder of a teen in Downtown East over a year and a half ago pleaded guilty on Wednesday to lesser charges.

Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported that 21-year-old Jason Chew Wei Beng will, alongside 10 others, is being prosecuted for rioting and for voluntarily causing hurt to 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie, who died from multiple stab wounds and other injuries sustained on the evening of 30 October 2010.

Chew’s defence council Tan Beng Swee said in mitigation that Chew is not a secret society member, that he was not aware that a fight would be taking place and that he did not carry any knives or choppers to the scene, CNA reported.

Responding to the defence, deputy public prosecutor Peggy Pao said that the charges against Chew were reduced to reflect Chew’s lesser involvement.

Separately Chew admitted to punching the head of another youth at Bishan bus interchange, alongside three friends, earlier that year in April.

For that, he could be jailed for up to two years, or be fined up to $5,000, or both.

For rioting, Chew could face up to seven years of imprisonment, as well as caning.

He will be sentenced on 6 March while cases of the others remain pending, reported local media.

"punching the head of another youth at Bishan bus interchange, alongside three friends, earlier that year in April". He is a violent person who should be kept away from society. ie. in long term jail.***

I think you won't even utter a word or claim yourself to be the parent of such society burden, moreover a murderer to someone else's children.

What kind of law is this? A lesser sentence for murder? The victim's parent should be very disappointed with this judgement by soft hearted judges.

Although I do not like it as much as you do. But he has lesser sentence, because he was not involved as much as the others.
      • youngpeople 3 months ago
However, they should give him a harsh sentence for being a repeated offender to violence.

10 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane a lesser sentence than hanging? I am not so sure. When he gets out of jail, he has to carry the stigma throughout his life, esp in our unforgiving society. He has to work doubly hard to repent and try to make it in life or he will fall into the vicious downward spiral of being a social outcast and lose his soul. So is it a lesser sentence?

Agree with Youngpeople. Hang the pests and our society will be better off. Not only will this achieve retributive justice, it will also serve as a warning for those who would choose a life of violence.

Hope the prosecutor will help impose a much heavier sentence to send a strong message across that the youth rioting, murder and gangsterism is not encouraged in this society. If he appeals, double his sentence. Thank you.

Its time a strong message is to be sent if we want to continue maintain some security in Singapore and of course, to teach our youths what not to do.

wow .... a repeated violent crime. Good, canning is the best for this crimes even if he
claimed is not a SS. If this type of punishment is not meted out or if he was not caught,
then he will grows more bolder and SS eventually. FINE !!!!!!! too and let the parents
feel the pinch and a message to other parents too.

I may be too harsh .... hey ... its reality mannnnnn. I got kids. I raised, work hard to feed,
educated them in the wish that they grew up a responsible people, and ....HOPEFULLY,
fillial .... if they can. BUT not let someone else kill my kids. Its like killing us, the parent.
      The parents hopefull.

Please give him the CANE to deter further or more such acts, ....... from ANYONE ...
LOCALS OR FOREIGNS. We have enough daily lifes problems and we dont need this.

Unbelieveable...after one and a half years, Chew will only be sentenced on 6 March while cases of the others remain pending!!!!!??? Why took so long?? It took them maybe only couple of minutes to end somebody's life but more than a year just to tell us that they are mainly just "rioting" ???? That's probably the best joke in town! Which authorities may I approached to beg them speed up the proceedings and perhaps hang a few???
