Two boys arrested for robbing news vendor

A news stand in Yishun was robbed – twice – in a space of five days by two boys, aged 11 and 12, reported The New Paper (TNP).

According to the paper, the two boys stole the container in which newspaper vendor Son Ah Hon, 71, kept her daily takings at around 7pm Wednesday last week. They also took her wallet from her bag, which was hanging from the side of the table.

The police told Yahoo! Singapore that the two boys were arrested on Tuesday after locating them based on enquiries. They are out on bail and will be charged with theft.

Based on TNP’s report, Son tried to struggle to keep hold of her container as one of the boys tried to snatch it away, but she could not match the strength of the boy.

The other boy took the chance to grab her wallet from her bag before they took off with about S$100, said TNP. The elderly lady, who mans the stand from 2:30pm to 8:30pm and earns S$12 daily, did not give chase as she had high blood pressure and walked with a limp, the paper added.

The incident, which happened at Block 174 Yishun Avenue 7, was not the first for the news stand. Just five days earlier, Son’s husband, Loh Lim Peng, 83, was also robbed by the same boys, as they made away with  S$70, wrote TNP. The couple’s son, Loh Tee Tee, 42, reported the thefts to the police on both occasions.
