[Updated] Xiaomi to launch walk-in store for repairs and build team in Singapore
Singapore is going to be Xiaomi’s hub for Southeast Asia. How will VP Hugo Barra pursue this region?
Chinese handset manufacturer Xiaomi today announced in a press conference that it will be launching a walk-in store meant for handling repairs at Central, Singapore, in conjunction with the release of its S$169 (US$133) Redmi smartphone this Friday, February 22, 2014.
Singapore is going to be Xiaomi’s hub for Southeast Asia. “We don’t have a number to sell as a KPI, said Bin Lin, Co-founder, Xiaomi, adding, “We are here to learn… to get our operations to where we’re (held) to a greater standard in Mainland China.”
The company has six major warehouses in China, and delivers phones in two to three days on average.
While users can choose to purchase from telcos (StarHub, SingTel and M1), which will be offering an unspecified price discount, they can also order Redmi off Xiaomi Singapore’s e-commerce site.
UPDATE: StarHub has announced that Redmi will be available for $0 on selected StarHub Mobile post-paid plans or S$169 (US$133) with a StarHub Mobile pre-paid bundle.
To purchase on Friday, customers will have to have a billing and delivery address in Singapore.
Hugo Barra, VP, Xiaomi also said that the firm will be opening a Singaporean entity, and hiring extensively in the city-state.
Lin said, “This is one thing we’re committed to, and we’re getting a lot of help from business partners. We’re hiring all sorts of functions.
Barra stepped in and explained, “We’re actively hiring in logistics, finance and further HR support, social media, there’s a lot — not only in Singapore, but people who spend a lot of time in Malaysia, Indonesia and so on.” The two shared that there is no fixed target for hiring.
In addition, Xiaomi’s smartphone Mi3 will be launched in Singapore on March 7, 2014 at S$419 (US$332).
