Celebrations in Crimean Capital of Simferopol Following Referendum Result

Thousands of pro-Russia demonstrators took to the streets of the Crimean capital Simferopol on the evening of March 16 to celebrate the passage of controversial referendum on Crimea’s secession from Ukraine. The referendum, which passed with 93 percent support, has been branded illegitimate by Ukraine’s central government and the result has been rejected by both the US and EU.

On March 17, the Crimean parliament voted to change the official name the Republic of Crimea, to change the currency to the rouble and to synchronise Crimean clocks with Moscow from March 30. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
