WP's Yaw Shin Leong resigns as party treasurer

Workers' Party's (WP) Yaw Shin Leong has resigned as party treasurer on Tuesday.

According to a WP statement, the party's Executive Council accepted Yaw's resignation from the party leadership at their monthly meeting.

He will cease as party treasurer with immediate effect.

"The Council has also decided to appoint the deputy treasurer, Yee Jenn Jong, as the party’s treasurer," said WP.

The party added that Yaw will be focusing on his responsibilities as Hougang's MP.

"The Workers’ Party assures residents of Hougang of the Party’s commitment to the constituency and to supporting the work of their Member of Parliament," added WP.

Yaw, 35, was recently embroiled in an online storm over rumours of an extra-marital affair with a married female opposition party member.

He has since declined to respond to the allegations.

How do you feel about this article?

It a dissapointment of WP especially its leader of WP. Come out clean and deny those rumours if this is not true. Silence is not the answer but only create more suspisiion. Do not think time will heal just by remain silence as people still remember and gradually lose trust. Once you are public figure also drawing a more than decent salary as compared to we common folks, it is your duty to speak the truth even if this is your private affair as we view having affair is morally wrong.

I don't think WP is creating suspicions. It's you who doesn't have faith with them. Don't push blame on them unless you are the dog!

PAP My Foot@ gosh.... why are you so rude.... It's quite disappointing that our fellow citizen behave in this ill manner.... whether you support WP or PAP, that's your personal choice, no one is gonna stop you. But please have some dignity and speak with respect... cos you are representing Singapore

For those who have been defending YSL that his private affairs have nothing to do with his work, put yourself in the shoes of the men whose wives committed adultery. How would you feel? Any decent man will think twice about having an affair with a married woman. If he does not even care about the feelings of fellow men, what makes you think he will bother about Singaporeans? Visiting a married woman in her home when her husband is not at home is not what a gentleman would do. Surely Singaporeans deserve a better MP who can do his job equally well without the moral transgressions?

Sorry Mr Yaw, a line has been crossed. You are a liability to WP. Either you come forward to demolish the allegations or vacate your MP seat in Hougang to allow a more credible candidate to take over.

When his affair was exposed in the media, then Malaysian Health Minister Chua Soi Lek admitted the affair the very next day and resigned from all positions in the government. This is what a real man should do. Stop being a coward and hide in your shell as if nothing has happened. Silence is not an option here. If WP still continues to take Singaporeans are idiots, it will be punished heavily in the next GE.

@Posion - With such a comment, it shows that you are so naive and an absolute idiot.
      • AhoPabo 3 months ago
@Posion - Your comment is not only uncalled for but also callous, immature, and deeply abusive! No reason for you to attack Jason personally in such a manner! It's people like you that stagnate constructive discussions. If you cannot argue with logic and reason, leave this thread!

@Poison, your comment was very insensitive. Shows what kind of person you are. Poor example of the WP Opposition supporter.

I am disappointed with Yaw and more so, with Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim. The First World Parliament slogan by WP will return to haunt them comes 2016 Election. As appointed public servants to all Singaporeans, WP is accountable and MUST give us voters to know the truth. If Yaw is innocent, he should come out now and declare his innocence. If the two senior public officer can be bought with SEX and are being investigated by CPIB, then I think Yaw should be investigated by CPIB as well. Why? He probably could use his role as an MP to help facilitate a favour for his girlfriend. One reason I can think why Low and Sylvia is not coming out to tell the truth is to allow Yaw to serve the full term and train up someone to take over him when he steps down in the next election. This is call 'TRANSPARENCY' by the Workers Party.
      • pratt 3 months ago
what an idiot you are,,, CPIB is for corruption, Yaw is having sex with another girl,,,, not corruption,,,, did you had sex with others other tan your spouse? who gives a damn,,,, stay out of people's bedroom, and people withh stay out of yours,,,

He is worst than jack Neo. At least Jack Neo dare to come out and admit his mistake. He as a MP should be shameful for himself. Oh ya WP should change name to WCP Without Comment party......
      • Ron Yeong 3 months ago
Did Jack Neo taking tax payers' money as allowance? Did Jack Neo having affair with married woman?
      • Jason 3 months ago
What Jack Neo did is wrong, but he had an affair with a willing single girl and NOT a MARRIED woman. Furthermore, he was upfront and honest about it instead of remaining silent. Jack is not a politician and he received so much flak for his indiscretion. Why should YSL be an exception?
      • Ricola Lemon 3 months ago
Jack Neo have no choice as the reporter have already been call by his mistress

i think it is possible for YSL & WP to sue TRE, ZB, WB & ....... for spreading rumours. BUT why are they not doing it or at least tell us that they are considering this option? SL the chairman is trained in law, she should be able to advice YSL & WP on this option so why does WP & YSL keep saying no comments for weeksssss???????

Yaw has hurt someone deep - Angela's husband.
    • NomoneyNotalk  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
@ Andy :Today's TNP reported that another affair of YSL had surfaced online. YSL had alleged affair with a married PRC woman! She is a neighbor who was helping YSL with mandarin translation for his speeches. YSL apparently screws her when he conveniently drops in for translation when her husband is out working....

OMG! A sex maniac being voted as MP to serve and poke and poke at other ppl's wives. Now I understand why so many married aunties like to attend his MPS with extra special services.
All members of Parliament and politicians should "introspect" before they preach morality in public life.
Super TeKo Yaw should resign as MP to prevent his immorality act on his residents' married aunties. As a MP,a Public figure in wolf skin, committing numerous adulteries.Worse than a beast!

This man has been married twice and he is still so young. His 1st marriage lasted only one year. He could have gone through a 2nd divorce if his present wife is not so forgiving. Why did the workers party allowed him to resign from the executive committee and treasurer post if it's only a personal matter. There could be other issues or wrongdoings which only the leaders of workers party knew when they accepted his resignation. Whatever he has done is not the fault of the workers party. When a staff of a company commits an unlawful act, you cannot charge the employer. So to those who have supported the workers party, let us continue to support them. This man would probably be replaced in the next GE.
    • BTU  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
The whole committee keep mum over this issue with only NO COMMENT OR RUMOURS so my guess they condone this kind of unmoral behaviour in their party. IF it is only RUMOURS OR NO TRUTH...then come out and DENY it...Why keep quiet and avoid the issue unless there are some truth in what was reported. Unless maybe not only ONE FEMALE was involved or with MARRIED OR UNMARRIED FEMALE....Well your guess is as good as mine YAW....
    • RG  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
Initially I had thought, give him a break, thats his personal affair. But after reading today's papers, I realised this man is a romeo. Below 30 years old and he has been married twice and almost divorce the 2nd time if his present wife is not forgiving. This time he went after a married woman. He won't have to resign from the executive commitee of the workers party if his party had supported him but it's not to be. Think about that.
    • Max  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
Following today's TNP report that Yaw also had an affair with a married PRC who was helping him with Chinese translation, one wonders how many women he is involved with. No wonder he resigned as Treasurer. Looks more like he was asked to resign.

This is getting ever damaging and out of control... WP and Low have to stand up and give the voters an explaination
    • John Lee  •  3 months ago
It's a shame! Not one but possibly 2 or 3 ladies, and among them married women! If this is the type of MP from WP, I really cannot say much of the party. And worse, the party is not saying anything as if it wants to protect YSL. A resignation from party post does not absolves YSL of his accountability of his behaviour to his voters. If he is a private citizen, I think nobody cares, but the issue really is about public accountability if you are holding public office. So I don't understand why there's so much blind swearings in this thread trying to make a feeble attempt at distingushing between personal affairs and his ability to contribute as an MP. If WP really meant what it says about creating a First World Parliament, then it should not just keep quiet on this issue. Such a behaviour smacks of quiet acceptance of YSL's behaviour. Surely a First World Parliament advocate cannot behave like this. This is a betrayer of trust and confidence. It is best for YSL to step down as an MP and give way to fresh elections. If the voters really want WP to continue to serve them, WP candidate will still return. So no need to worry. But for the party to procratinate further, it will only dig itself deeper into the ground, and causing more to lose faith and confidence in the party to keep to its words. Low Thia Kiang/Sylvia Lim, it's time to speak out and weed out the bad eggs in your camp!

WP supporters voted you in 5/11 cos they feel you make a different in representing them. If you have an affair (or not) just admit it and move on. Though it may hurt your political career & tarnish your reputation. but it doesn't make you less as a person. You owe your supporters an explanation. If you don't, you are not giving yourself any chance.

Following this resignation, I have the following questions on my mind:
      a. Is this a disciplinary action taken by WP on Mr Yaw? If yes, why wasn't it explained by WP?
      b. The internal party scandal has not been clarified by WP. Will WP be clarifying over this issue? Exactly how many WP members are involved
      c. What disciplinary action is WP CEC going to take?
      d. How will WP restore the confidence of the public?

If he had lied in his private life; he could have lied in his work too. He might have use his authority to over-power that lady whom he allegedly having an affair.
“As you sow, so you shall reap. He has to step down as a MP
