[Update at 6:30pm: adding more details, eyewitness account]

One man died and 12 people were injured in an accident involving a lorry and a car on the Pan Island Expressway on Friday.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), they were alerted to the accident on the PIE towards the direction of Jurong before the Simei Avenue exit at 7:24am.

A man was pronounced dead on the scene. Also, 11 men and one woman were injured and they were all brought to Changi General Hospital, said an SCDF spokesperson.

According to media reports, the men were on the lorry and the woman was a passenger in the car.

The man who died, according to The Straits Times, is a 29-year-old construction worker from India. He was reportedly seated at the back of the lorry with other workers when the car rear-ended it at a high speed, making it tilt over.

One eyewitness, who wanted to be known as Amanda, told Yahoo! Singapore that traffic on the PIE was at a standstill when she approached the scene on her motorcycle on her way to work, entering the expressway from Changi. Vehicles passing by were told to stop for 15 minutes while the lorry and the car were moved to the side, she added.
